scottlock40 0
Hello lads & ladies I'm after some advice - symptoms first - golf vr6 97 running erratic revs up and down sounds like a tank even when warmed up quite smokey off whiteish colour strong smell of petrol.Little story to go with it - the car has been garaged for a while decided to get her ready for the summer, running fine all it needed was an exhaust and wheel bearings all round so off to my local vr6 'specialist' i sourced a decent exhaust and he got the bearings, so I got a phone call a week later saying it needed a coil pack which I got and gave to him and two weeks later I went to collect my vr (£500) it was running a little ruff he said its because there was no petrol in it so I put some in and drove straight home as it needs camber and tracking done due to new bearings which I planned on doing yesterday but I turned over and got the above symptoms ( it's had a new rad, temp sensor, stat and stat housing all fitted myself ).What can my problem be, I know I can take it back and demand it be sorted but to be honest I'm fed up with dodgy mechanics and the 'could be this could be that gimme more money and I'll try something else' approach.Cheers guys
Ickyketseddie 89
Sounds like it could need a new MAF mate. Try disconnecting it and see how it runs then. Won't be prefect but should run smoother if that's the issue. Certainly should show if that's the problem. Smoking could be something else altogether, is it using any water? scottlock40 0
No, not losing any water, my first thought was maybe MAF even though it was ok before garage visit. I tried unplugging it and there was no difference whatsoever not even a slight change.
Ickyketseddie 89
Ok well it'd be worth plugging it into vagcom to check the other sensors for fault codes. Is it firing on all 6? Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
andymk312v 15
I think that means your maf has had it.The car should change when its unplugged, (if unplugging when running) it will change to a safe level of Fuelling as it has no idea what's going on without the maf. scottlock40 0
Cheers lads, if there was no change when unplugged then I'm thinking the MAF would not be the problem? Is there a chance I could have bought a dodgy coil pack maybe as it was an eBay job £80 brand new advertised as for vr6 or Ford? I think it's about time that I invested in a decent vagcom
cactusjackslade 146
What part of the exhaust has been changed?? Has the lambda been messed with??
MJ Vr6 79
Did you unplug MAF while car was running?
scottlock40 0
The exhaust was changed from the cat back so I'm pretty sure he didn't touch the lambda. And yes I unplugged the MAF while it was running and there was no change at all.Cheers
Surreyvr6 199
Could it be blowing badly, I changed my exhaust and in nov and noticed it blowing slightly a few weeks later, my cars been off the road for a few months and when I fired her up mine sounded a bit rough, not had the chance to look properly as I've got a few jobs to do first but my first thoughts were that the blowing may have got worse, hoping it's nothing more when I look at it properly lol Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
scottlock40 0
Hello mate, cheers for the exhaust, I'm gonna have a proper look on the weekend, doesn't sound like a blowing exhaust though
Surreyvr6 199
Na mine doesn't really to be honest, I just quickly put it down to that quickly as my engine was running fine last time I fired her up and the only problem I knew about was the blowing exhaust and after reading that you recently changed your cat back put 2 and 2 together, hopefully the outcomes 4 lol Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Surreyvr6 199
Pretty sure when mine was running the revs seemed pretty stable, mines been sat around for a few months too, just sounded kind of splirty Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
