VR6Pete 1,455
Bloody gearbox is whining, and getting louder!Naturally it would be rude to put a standard box back in, so what are my options?- 6 speed?- Tweaked final drive?Come on guys, what do you sugest?Pete
fabio_vr6 0
oh mate, you just had your chains done, could it be low on oil?check it when its cold on a level surface, could have leaked when they took the box out.
andy 0
Oil change ;-) Cheap option!
VR6Pete 1,455
oil was checked when chains were done (month ago), I've had problems as of late getting it into reverse and first gear, the whine is at about 2,000 RPM when im letting off the gas... *Diff pins?*
fabio_vr6 0
wine when letting of the gas is usually normal, even on a new box sometimes

VR6Pete 1,455
nope. I know it isnt being amplified through my mounts as it's gotton progressivly worse over the last few months...
acf8181 0
is worth checking you oil level (17mm allen key bolt on front of gearbox, remove it and with car level the oil should be upto that hole)....but as i know from chatting to you you've had whining for a while.it'll get worse and worse will the 'box eventually implodes though, as fab's said, they do whine a fraction anyway...my rebuilt one does very slightly even! (nothing like an MR2's gearbox tho...you should hear them! lol)6 speed is a very expensive option....be much cheaper to get a rebuild with a lower final drive. the middle cost option is a rebuild with lower FD and a quaife ATB diff [ Edited Thu May 12 2005, 06:27AM ]
Joe M 0
At the very least go for the quaife diff, expensive but well worth it.If I was getting it done again id definately change the final drive, standard is 3.3, sensible would be going to a 3.64. A bit mad would be going to a 3.944, avoid this one if you do a lot of motorway miles.

I just fancy a little more acceleration from the box. how do the 3.64 and 3.94 impact on the top end speed of the VR? I dont do all that much motorway driving (apart from going to gigs and shows)Thanks,Pete

Joe M 0
Im not completely sure ive got the maths right on this but I think basically with the 3.6fd the engine will be revving about 10% higher for each given speed, and with the 3.9 it will be revving about 20% higher. With the 3.9 the vr would probably be hitting the rev limiter in 5th at about 135-140mph. VRmonster 1
hey pete, if your interested i can get some info on a peloquin diff group buy, shipped from the states but much cheaper than the quaife. im getting one anyway but if there are 5 ish ppl then may get a bit knocked off...oh, and my 2.sl0w box is clunking when i accelerate or decellerate, but goes away when i disengage the clutch, is that the dif pin? acf8181 0
yeah...peloquins are cheap at the mo cause of the exchange rate.
fritzenberg 3
does the corrado gearbox have shorter ratios thanthe golf?
Joe M 0
Not sure, but the final drive is the same on 2.9 models as the golf.American 2.8 corrados get the 3.6 final drive as standard.[ Edited Thu May 12 2005, 08:21PM ]

VRmonster 1
only kidding mate. if you dropped the final drive then it would pull all of the gears in closer, meaning quicker acceleration, but then in 5th you would hit the limiter quicker, thus a lesser top end.if you added a 6 speed short box then you would pull the ratios closer meaning better acceleration, but keep the top end speed due to having the 6th cog.i think the quaife kit most go for uses the standard 1st + 2nd gears, pulls 3rd, 4th, 5th in closer, and adds a 6th at the same ratio as the old 5th (you get me?)so probably better off getting the 3.94 final drive but then adding a tdi 5th gear as well to bring the top end back into check. then spending the money elsewhere. VR6Pete 1,455
the box is the last performance "mod" I entend to purchase, not going down the forced induction route. I've got roughly 2 grand to spend on box/diff, will this cover it?Pete
