jamesw6810 80
Right, so im going to start a mini ongoing progress thread for my newly aquired (2 days) mulberry highline vr6. Specs are 2.8 vr62 owners2 keys!!!all electrics work perfectly1 speck of rust bubbling on the tailgate and not a stitch anywhere else95,000 miles with a full service history Boring bits over heres a bit of photo viewing for the engine bay work ive been doing this afternoon....... after my cleaning effort and my new wheels, all centre capped up and cleaned/protected added some clear repeaters to replace the skanky old ones Thats it for now, 3 hours work gone in and yes i know it needs a clean, but tomorrow i will be mostly clay barring and then covering for a couple of days before the machine polish comes out. Products used on the bay were, some gunk, autoglym bumper restorer for the plastics, some wire wool and autosol for the metallic bits until i get chance to polish them up and a toothbrush for the hard to reach areas. Been playing with this also for the last 2 days in readyness for fitting, bit more sanding and polishing to do. Im off for a beer!!! jamesw6810 80
Beer swigged, bit more polishing done.......
Lukey. 381
Good looking how did you do the black? Did you paint the whole thing black then sand the paint off the bits to polish?
jamesw6810 80
masked it up prior to sanding mate, the sanding and polish then took off the slight overspray on the 600 grit stage. Going to add some britemax easy cut and final finish to it tomorrow to see if i can bring it on further
jamesw6810 80
Todays efforts, fully clay barred and wheels finished using some wonder wheels which i find an excellent product for shifting burnt on brake dust and tar, followed by some autoglym alloy wheel sealent. These are before the clay and just a pre wash post clay..... and wheels de tarred and sealed Thats it for now, wheels hopefully on next week and some time to find to machine polish. Car cover on and sleep for a few days now. actually fits the mk3 well and seems soft enough and waterproof (chucked a bucket of water over it)Halfords medium advanced cover for reference, figured the tools are top notch so this could be aswell Edited February 20, 2014 by jamesw6810 VR6Pete
Therusterman 59
I always thought wonder wheels was a little heavy handed to be cleaning wheels with, been using Iron X to clean my wheels if they need a deep clean. Other wise the highline is looking great
jamesw6810 80
it is harsh, but they were sat in a mercedes scrappy for a while so were a little neglected....iron x is for iron deposits really and is as harsh for continued use, and it bloody stinks! now they are cleaned polished and sealed the dust will just fall off with water, did the insodes of the rim also so again will just wash off. jamesw6810 80
eyes shut and praying these wheels fit right, done my homework but it may be a little tight in there!! final offset of et13 on 195/40/16 7j.........
Marneus 78
Nothing a little arch rolling won't sort mate
jamesw6810 80
no no, dont want to be doing that.....i think ive faffed and searched enough to think they will fit ok, the majority of the arch rolling comes from 8j plus at that offset so should be ok, its not too low either. who knows hopefully itl be fine
jamesw6810 80
http://www.gulfcoasteuros.com/forums/?showtopic=69073 ahh this gives me confidence, the final offset here are et9 and et17 lowered 60 mm.......
jamesw6810 80
2 hours done today, best leave it the weekend or the wife will be getting grumpy Wheels off onto 4 axle stands and had a go at the arches on passenger side, all metal bits wire wooled down to remove the protruding rust ready for some hammerite treatment.Pressure washed down then coated in gunk, brushed to a froth then pressure washed again. before i started and after not too bad, bit left to do with the hammerite and do something with the struts.....any suggestions? The arches will be left as they are will look into some sort of protective coating for them i think apologies for the pic heavy posts Edited February 21, 2014 by jamesw6810 bennyk
jamesw6810 80
you guys think this would work for the struts? the black stuff works well on metal parts and calipers etc so i can see why not? After prepping of course. http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_198429_langId_-1_categoryId_255239 Edited February 21, 2014 by jamesw6810
bennyk 1,238
Yeah can't see why that wouldn't work, if you want to try and hold the rust back a bit longer it might be worth treating with something like jenolite first, used it on a few things and it works really well. Good to see someone else giving an old vr a bit of love! Keep it up mate! jamesw6810
jamesw6810 80
was thinking of getting hold of some bilt hamber stuff for the rust, dont want to smoothe it too much or the hammerite wont cure properly, the struts are never going to be as new, but they do look poor at the minute so maybe just a refresh rather than a refurb as such. jamesw6810 80
update...after saying i was going to leave it for the weekend black hammerite smooth on the metal parts after a wire brush to remove the flaky rust but leave a surface to bond to. on the inner plastic arches i used a product called Back for good, quality plastic trim restorer and leaves a lasting finish also....bit of a 50/50 photo to show the effect. http://s1060.photobucket.com/user/jamesw68101/library/ will look smoother when dry, photos taken directly after i painted it so looks a bit rough and wet at the minute Edited February 22, 2014 by jamesw6810 jamesw6810 and daveyboy
jamesw6810 80
Right, got my set of 5x100/5x112 adaptors here today, good news is that the oem golf bolts fit through the merc alloys as an m14 and sit flush with the mounting face of the adapter......so no chopping or new bolts needed:) just waiting for 2 tyres to arrive today and hopefully they should be on today....IF they fit. Spigot rings arrived also.

jamesw6810 80
nah mate, wrong adapters! progress.....had to reshape a bent abs ring on the drivers side before i could get the wheels on....anyway their on http://s1060.photobucket.com/user/jamesw68101/media/P1030465_zpsf6330225.jpg.html?sort=3&o=4 http://s1060.photobucket.com/user/jamesw68101/media/P1030468_zps4ab1d4a0.jpg.html?sort=3&o=2 http://s1060.photobucket.com/user/jamesw68101/media/P1030470_zps12afdc0e.jpg.html?sort=3&o=1 http://s1060.photobucket.com/user/jamesw68101/media/P1030462_zpsb8b47346.jpg.html?sort=3&o=6 and a bit of restickering in the engine bay http://s1060.photobucket.com/user/jamesw68101/media/IMG_1602_zps65be0ccc.jpg.html?sort=3&o=0 pooped now!! Marneus 78
Looks awesome mate. The wheels sit nice, just needs to be a bit lower jamesw6810
jamesw6810 80
nope, no lower mate, looks spot on as it is im not into the 'scene" where slammed cars is concerned. Next up is the manifold fitting at some point
Marneus 78
I'm not into the whole "Stance" thing either as I like to drive my car but I do like there to be no more than 20mm from the top of the tyre to the arch as it just looks perfect. I dare say yours will be easier on the old pot holes & speed bumps though. What size adapters did you end up finally going for?
