The VR6 i bought at the weekend has done 100800 miles and it hasn't had the chain done yet. I've done a bit of reading around the subject on here and elsewhere, i'm beginning to wonder if it's worth having this done?

If i do have it done i may as well get the clutch changed too, anything else that could be done while it's apart?

my cousin will do the work as he has his own business so that will help the labour cost, but how much am i looking at for the parts?

I know almost nothing about VR6s specifically at the moment as i've been into my vauxhalls before this, so any advice is very welcome.

maybe you'd change your mind if you'd seen what i've seen nick ;)

you can't say its propeganda by chain manufacturers anyway, as they're made by vw and they say they don't need doin! lol

its possible to check on the condition of your top runners (its the runners not the chains themselve that are the prob) quite easily...i'm gonna do a guide when i get the time. basically, inlet manifold and cam cover have to be removed so you can have a peek in.

as for parts costs....

timing chain parts total about £160 from gsf (or twice that from vw for identical parts)

clutch is £80 from vw (they're pretty decent clutches at a fair price so why risk a different one)

hows your gearbox? any whines or worn suncros...rebuild is prob £300ish if you need it.

new gearbox fluid is about £30

cool, thanks guys and acf8181 for the detailed info. My gearbox seems to be pretty sound but then again i don't know any different as i don't have anything to compare it against though. No noises or crunches though, the only thing i can think of is that going from 1st to reverse or vice versa needs a little persuasion occasionally, but that could just be me lol ;)

who is gsf, do you have a link/contact?

I think it's a rumour propagated by chain manufacturers. I refuse to have mine done. Vive la resistance!

lol.....I’m with you on this one nick....how many vr's have you heard of who’s chains have actually failed...errrrr 1 to my knowledge........... Mines knocking on the door of 100k with no signs what so ever of needing them done........I blame the "timing chain fairy" for these rumours..... :P;)

Cool, well my engine runs really smooth, no rattles, tapping, shaking, dinging, honking or even groaning so i don't think i'll need to worry for a while at least ;)

when i got the car i made sure i had a bit extra left over for emergencies, so if it does start making noises at me, i'll be able to fix it asap :)

Cheers guys, i think i'll leave it for a while and live on the dangerous side lol.

As VR6Pete says, the simplex upper chained engines with the solid polymer pads barely wear at all. But the early engines with the resin lined metal pad need them checking at 100,000 really and on these engines (duplex upper chain), the lack of a rattle means f'ck all. Don't be complacent.....lift the rocker and check with your own eyes.

At the end of the day, it's a simple check to perform. as kevhaywire says, look for your self, I know of a VW who's chains didnt rattle and then boom, they snapped. causing a fair amount of damage, I was down my mates garage last month and the intermediate chain pulley had goofed and pretty much bent every valve in the head.

Just check it for your self :)

actually...i've never known of one failing after rattling...they all went boom with no warning!

Just out of interest.......how many vrs do you know that have actually gone boom due to chains failing.....as far as I’m aware the only one I know of was your mates highline???...no one on this forum has had there chains break

so 2 possible 3 people...between the vr6oc and cgti....IMO......that a very small percentage when you think we are knocking on the door of nearly 2000 members alone on the owners club................its just people go on about chains as if the are cambelts thats all :)
