Cam Installation - Bent valve?

Recommended Posts

Was swapping my cams and didn't pay 100% attention to the orientation of one the cams when i put it in.

When i went to place the cam locking tool into the slots that is when i noticed that one of the cams was 180 degrees out of alignment.

Will this bend a valve?

depends on which valves were opened when you bolted the cam down pushing the valves into the cylinder.

If it had pushed the valve down onto the piston you may not have been able to bolt the camshaft caps down as the cam wouldnt seat propperly.

You may have gotten lucky as theres not really any angle on the valves so to bend them

If you think youve bent them then you'll have to take the head off to check otherwise you can gamble and put it all back together then pressure test it

either way its nerve racking!

I installed mine wrong, bent one had to strip head ending up rebuilding everything while its all in bits, set me back abit but least its all new in there now.

Hmmmm

I was able to put the cam in and when installing didn't notice any more resistance than normal. It was only after i had installed the cams (before installing the upper chain) and using the cam locking tool did i notice that one was 180 degrees out! So took the cam out turned it though 180 degrees and reinstalled and then put the chains on.

The engine also turns over by hand ok so i think i'll do a compression test to see if that reveals anything.

I reckon it will be fine mate it took me some amount of force and a huge breaker bar to bend a valve turning the engine over with a cam out of line so if there wasnt any noticable resistance then I would put money on it that they havnt touched
