jaks14 174
So... thought I would start a thread about my mk2 that I bought around April this year (2014)... I bought it from a guy in Newcastle (not far from me) for a very respectable price.. basically I bought the car after selling my mondeo st220 wanting to get into the vag scene... always wanted to get a raddo vr6 since I was a kid and first set eyes on one but when this came up I couldn't resist...The car has been around the mill of owners (all seem to be club members from different forums). its seems to have done the rounds but came out still in good shape.. I took it on with no MOT, no TAX but with 2 wallets of service history.. 1 for the car itself and 1 for the engine with a genuine checked 75k FSH from vw dealerships.. lump came from a 97 mk3 highline which was dragon green I believe. The pics below of how the car was when I bought it, stripped down a lot and most of the parts were in boxes in the back of the car. I got it home on the back of a trailer and placed it strategically on my grass outside knowing it wouldn't take me long before I attacked it and got started rooting through boxes and building it back up to see what I had and what I didn't...jimmys oakvr daveyboy, damian8588 and GT53BAD
jaks14 174
From here I got the interior in and arches/bumpers/lights and original grill back on. And got it to this...I stumbled upon a few extra parts that I didn't seem to need (must have been bought as spares)..Next came it's MOT to see what it was really like and what type of depth I was getting myself Into.. fearing the worst I booked it up for the next week and drove it there... On the way, disaster.. It overheated.. steam from the bonnet, temp through the roof (I stopped as soon as it was safe) switched off and let it cool down.. eventually got it to the MOT test station and it began...Guess what...It only went and flew through the MOT, only advisory was 1 n/s/rear tyre was on the minimum tread depth.. The guy also worked out that it was my thermostat that had jammed up and caused the engine to overheat and not let the fan kick in... With a new thermostat and alternator fitted after its test I took it staright to the post office for a shiney new tax disc ... Then the fun began... jimmys oakvr boab3, daveyboy and damian8588
jaks14 174
When I got home after weeks of searching through eBay I got to order a few hundred quids worth of new bits and pieces to make it a little better and feel like my own.. After giving it a good clean inside and out I started to notice all the chips/scratches and little bits and bobs that would eventually need sorting out.. but never the less I gave it a machine polish and got out what I could and touched up what was needed to use it as my daily until I got time to get it all repaired and repainted.. jimmys oakvr daveyboy and damian8588
jaks14 174
Now I'm here lol.... another couple of coats of primer on the bonnet on Friday then I'm gonna pain it on Sunday, with any luck I should have it done, windows back in and all flattened and polished by Wednesday next week.. I've got some banded steels being made at present to 8j front and 9j rears. Gonna do something with them that's gonna be a bit marmite I think, your either gonna think it's different and like or literally hate it hahaha... I will upload some more snaps next week once I've got some paint on it..jimmys oakvr Russvrt and daveyboy
jaks14 174
Sunday has arrived... and so did the paint and laquer for the mk2.. got it all taped up this morning and started to lay down the first coat of paint, covered all the primer patches first then moved onto putting a dusty coat across the full car for colour.. The fresh paint I put on it seemed to be so metallicy compared to the paint that was already on, maybe a different variant to what the last painter used.. I have used around 2 litres of colour and around 3 ltrs of anti scratch lacquer to get a high build on the panels so there is enough to flat down and buff up, the car isn't standing me much at all at the minute so I wasn't going for a show standard paint job, a nice flat clean car is all I'm after. Something respectable that I can use as my daily and be a bit of a sleeper for the young boy racers who want a go in their corsas ... I think a dirty derv badge will be next on my list of purchases to go on the back end.. Gonna leave the car another couple of days before I start flatting it down with a block to really give it a good chance to harden off and be cured enough.. I might get the trims and glass cleaned up tommorow. I ended up nearly forgetting to paint my eyebrow for the front. Put it inside the car and only just remembered in time when I had enough paint left in the gun lol.. but it's now done and ready to put on. It's just a plastic panel so is it best to just use some mastic or no nails to attach it to the grill???? It's got no holes or anything for self tappers.. Progress pics will be added the more I get through it...jimmys oakvr D11PS, daveyboy and Bealieboy

jaks14 174
Today was productive, got started around 10am and started flatting down the fresh paintwork for a good buff up with the machine polisher.. really happy with the end result being that I done the whole respray in a garage without the conditions of a spray booth.. I used 2000 wet and dry with plenty water and soapy detergent so stop it from sticking and dragging across the panels. After a good flat down I got out the polisher and started with the compound (g3).. keeping it cold so I didn't burn it but went over each panel until there was no visible scratches left from flattening. All I need to do now is the roof which will be tommorow morning and then build it back up again. Number plates on etc... I'm getting a ltr of bumper textured black on Friday to redo my plastic arches, skirts and front and rear bumper tops to give them a new clean fresh look... I'm wanting it to look as original as possible but with some nice little subtle changes.. Any comments or criticisms will be appreciated.. I still need to go back across the full car with a soft sponge mop and some soft high build wax to give the paintwork a really deep shine and look. Then a massive clean inside and out (probably with a jet wash and some snow foam) just to get rid of any excess buffing compound which will be stuck in all the places that I can't get to.I'm looking for someone in the north east to do a full interior valet if anyone has any recommendations, just to give the seats and carpets and nice clean smell and get rid of 23 years of muck and grime which will be in there.. I've still got some major work to be done in the engine bay regarding tidying cables and wires up and trying generally to remove items from the bay so that I can have the holes welded up and them smoothed.. Here are some more pics of how I'm getting on with it...jimmys oakvr daveyboy and D11PS
jaks14 174
Today I managed to get quite a lot done... windows back in, rubber trims on, front end on, wiper motor and arms, door seals etc etc.... All I have left to do is flat and polish the roof (I've just flattened it down tonight) so it's ready to re polish back up maybe tommorow or Thursday. It's absolutely filthy inside and out to be honest so next on my list is to get it cleaned down to a degree that I can still use it..Textured black paint is ready to be picked up so I can get the tops of the bumpers, arches, skirts and door mouldings all re painted with a fresh coat of black. Bumpers I will just paint on the car.. Guy from the mk2 owners club has sold me the two door moulding strips thank god so I don't have to silicone them on again ... Mint condition with all the clip retainers intact.. Next week I've booked a full interior valet Inc the seats and carpets being soaped and vacuumed, getting rid of 23 years of grime and dirt..So here are some more pics from today's progress...jimmys oakvr damian8588, daveyboy and D11PS
jaks14 174
Bumpers done in textured black paint to give them a new lease of life.. All my arches and trims are done ready to be fitted tommorow so it's getting there.. got the roof polished up which was the last thing to do bodywork side.. just waiting on wheels being made now and getting them painted.. hopefully it will look alright at the vw festival in august in leeds... daveyboy

jaks14 174
Cheers mate. I Really like the oak green, never thought I would, dunno what they had painted it with before hand mind you... It was really dark and flat. The Oak green that I have put on it is a really metallicy dark green.. plenty of pearl in it and it's made a massive difference in my eyes..
