buster01 2
Hi guys. Saw a P reg 3dr Golf in Metallic Twilight Violet advertised on gumtree. Its out in the east of Scotland which would be good for me distance wise. Pics of outside and engine but none inside. Quite standard looking which I like and motd to next July. Doesn't say anything about service history. 125k miles and only £995. Feel that's quite cheap. Any advice ?Cheers. Gary.
Bealieboy 1,625
I paid £1100 for my 77k mileage vr. Price is about the norm for an average unmodifed example. Check for rust in the usual mk3 places and that it doesn't make a metallic vibration from the engine at 1000-1500 rpm, that will be the timing chain. There's members on here that know a lot more than me about the vr and will give you some more pointers. You could check the buyers guide on the owners club so you're certain of what to look for. You'll not look back once you've bought one though! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Edited November 17, 2014 by Bealieboy D11PS and daveyboy
Therusterman 59
Seems a reasonable price. Would need to find out what the service history is like as there could be a few big bills lurking, to name a few; Timing chains+tensionersClutchCooling system overhaulSuspension; bushes, track rod ends etcHeater matrix maybeDouble double check for rust. Popular areas are the sills, around the rubber bungs in the floor and of course the bottom of the front wings. Most of the above is ripe for replacing around the 100k mile mark Paular, Bealieboy, michael5556 and 1 other

buster01 2
I am off to Falmouth at the weekend to look at a 1994 silver 5 dr model. Visiting my friend at same time so see what happens. I missed the other one. Is it quite pricey for repairing paint work etc ? The car is 20 years old so not expecting it to be a minter at 1500 quid ! Mechanicals , body work then slight mods over next 18 months ....i hope !
Surreyvr6 199
Are you from the Falmouth area? At £1500 you shouldn't be getting a bad VR to be fair, what's the mileage, condition etc?Sent from your mums iPhone using Tapatalk
Ashley Carter 8
+1 for the rust around the sills Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Big J 283
Rust along top of windscreen is another one, check for any damp in footwells and under boot carpets. How handy are you mechanically? If you've ever changed a car clutch in the past the timing chains aren't such a big job to do at home with assistance from the forum, but hellish expensive on the labour if done in a garage. And at that point, it would have to be an Indy specialist that knows the VR engine not the local Kevin Webster. buster01
buster01 2
Condition is good . Still got to see her up close though. Mileage is 132k. Motd til next July. Sorry. I'm not from Falmouth. Meeting with friends and drive her home to Scotland on Sunday if all OK. Mechanically not bad but not a pro !! Trying to get a lock up from my local council for it but no word yet. Yeah I would be making sure KEVIN kept his hands off her !!!!! Looking forward to driving and working on her. Second car for me and missus to enjoy. Vw enthusiast like you so will take my time getting her up to a good standard. VR6Pete
daveyboy 897
Good luck with the one your going to look at mate. I wouldn't worry too much on mileage. I'd be more interested in service history to see how the engine has been cared for. Dig through the receipts to see if there's any proof of timing chain work etc. Like Pete said take a look through the buying guide either print it out or make a mental note on things to look out for. And if the silver ones isn't upto much I'm sure there's a couple on here for sale
buster01 2
Well I have brought my first VR6. I went down to Newquay like I said I was going to do and look at her. Well body wise I was expecting it to be better as there is rust in usual places. No rust in engine bay or bottom of the boot but will need paint job to bring up to standard. Reflex Silver. Nice pearlescent colour which won't be cheap to repair !!! Mechanically ....well she got us up the road so is not bad. I think the coils issue is making itself known as intermittent misfire appears now and then. Whirring noise from rear so bearing gone ? Clutch is near end of life but everything works and she goes well. I will get PIC on here when possible as she is a 5 door and bog standard. BBS wheels and 3 spoke wheel. I will do mechanical problems first then start saving for the paint job. She is twenty years old so not expecting a minter at 1500 quid! Going to sort full membership now too. Any advice on above problems would be welcome. Dyi would be great for bearing and misfire issue but been a long time since I worked on a car !!! I drive every weekend . Love it !!! daveyboy 897
The slight miss could be plug leads mate. When it's dusk have a look down each plug hole while the car is running and you might see the leads arching out against the head that's what was wrong with mine so it was a nice easy cheap fix.
