VR6 4motion turbo

Recommended Posts

Hello guys, I just picked up a 2002 golf mk4 4motion with the 2.8 24v engine. The engine has 106k miles and full service history and I plan on sticking a turbo on it and aiming for 400bhp.

I've built a turbocharged 900cc bike engine that managed 225bhp at 15psi of boost so I know the general ins and outs of a turbo conversion, but would like to ask some more vr6 specific questions.

The plan is:

GT3582 turbo t3 .82AR

Intercooled

Head spacer to get me to 9:1

Head studs

Rod bolts

Main studs (are these necessary?)

Obviously all the other smaller things but those are the main points.

So I have a few questions about the VR6, I was planning on building a turbo manifold that attaches to the existing cast manifolds, turns through 180 degrees and both come together to give me a top mount turbo position, I have read that people have made a good amount of power doing this, is this okay to do or am I just better off getting a cast log type manifold (china copy)? I can tig weld stainless with a back purge. Examples of the type of manifold I want to build is in this link http://forums.kilometermagazine.com/showthread.php?4684097-Pic-request-Custom-vr6-turbo-manifolds&p=62643152&viewfull=1

If I go with a top mount turbo, I expect that I will have to change the intake manifold, since I am 24V, if I go to a short runner intake to keep intercooler pipes simple, is there going to be an issue with the different port lengths or is it okay?

I know that I will probably have to go to a 4" MAF housing, I would like to find out who is going to be tuning/chipping my ECU so that they can tell me what to do in regards to the MAF, so who will I be able to go to for tuning/chip? I've seen United Motorsport on here and also Stealth Racing but haven't seen much recent activity at a glance.

And finally for this round of questions, since I have the 4motion gearbox, what clutch would you guys recommend that will handle the power? approx. 350-400ft/lbs. I see a lot of information for the 2WD clutches and they seem pretty cheap, but I have a feeling that the 4motion ones are a bit more expensive.

All information welcome

Dave

Hi you alright

I'm in a similar state of mind to turbo my 24v

Others with more experience with this engine will chime in

So far I've read that the inlet don't like big boost

But with that blower I'm guessing you won't be running much to hit 400???

I like the low end torque of the standard inlet manifold so I personally would like to keep it

I think you can get a maf housing of a mk5 r32 dsg which I think are little bigger

The problem with the clutch is more so with the duel mass flywheel

I got a lightweight flywheel from ttv racing

http://ttvracing.com/product/vw-golf-r32-mk4-lite/?type=flywheels&engine=vw-r32&manufacturer=volkswagen

I only used a sTandard clutch as I don't want more than 300ft lbs torque

So which 24v do you have is it the early aue single coil pack or later bde coil on plug?

We'll I was thinking of mouning the turbo in the centre of the block at the back, I want top mount for the cool looks but also for maintenance etc.

However if I do relocate the battery to the boot and get rid of the stock air box, there is a massive amount of room there that a turbo could populate, I'll be pulling my bumper off again tomorrow to check intercooler figment and pipe routing to get all the boost pipes and intercooler ordered and will check other possibilities intake manifold and turbo position
