Hi everybody.

i would say im new but not new in a way (had an account a while back, cant remember username or email and the acc was hardly used, so thought id set up a new one)

well a little bit of where i am.

proud owner of a mk3 GTi and mk3 VR6. GTi engine has subsequently died and my VR is going to be a doner car. all of which i am in the process of doing right now. managed to hire a unit/workshop in Essex to provide space so i can get to work.

I will be uploading a thread on the rebuild and the conversion. and will talk about my future plans for the old girl.

i havent been to any meets yet - but once the conversion is done i aim to be at quite a few.

well thats enough of the boring stuff. its good to be back and hopefully chat to you all soon!

Welcome back Dan. Get Bealieboy down to help according to CABBS Bealieboy is a VW master tech lol

Oh yes Dan,

Bealieboy is mustard mate. If you have any problems or need any help he's the man with a wealth of knowledge.

Daveyboy has obviously picked up on all the good help Bealieboy's given me.

And a bonus Dan as he's only around the corner and won't mind popping over if you have any problems.

Ignore cabbs, he's as mad as a box of monkeys, and daveyboy's not far behind. In our neck of the woods, we'd call blokes like them retards! My knowledge of the Vr6 extends as far as changing a headlight bulb and making a cup of tea, I'm better at the latter!

haha - i do love a good cup of tea only problem is im lacking a kettle in the unit

i do have a sandwich toaster and a small 2kw heater as there is no insulation whatsoever.

there will be small bits and pieces i need advice about - like my post about cleaning the block and getting cams

cheers.

i was thinking of doing it myself but because its so dirty was thinking of maybe a professional job? i suppose if i do it myself then i swould have more money for maybe getting a bit of head work done.

too many choices too many things to do.

Do it yourself Dan. You'll save a fortune. Scrape all the think shite off and get some paraffin and a stiff paint brush. Paraffin eats in to the shite and it will come off easy. Just brush the paraffin all over but don't get it inside the lump mate.

see now thats the problem. ill be bricking myself not to get it inside.

is it that much of a big problem if i were to get it inside the lump even though im replacing all piston rings, thrust bearings and main shells?

I should think an oil change would clear any that gets inside. I'm sure redex is a kind of paraffin and we use that in our fuel tanks for its cleaning properties. Just take the little and often approach whilst cleaning, but give it a nice bit of a soak to loosen the worst.

Good stuff that paraffin for shifting shit mate. I don't see it being much of a problem if you get splashes inside but you don't want to be pitting anything so block the holes and clean the top off and use duck tape.

ill leave the Jizer in the tin then

so something along the lines of STP / REDEX or parafin based should be good.

now im not saying im a firestarter but surely burning said product once on the block would remove everything??

thats a joke btw lol

cool. i will have a butchers

just found a place in Gillingham. pressure test and skim of the head £80

pressure test of block £100

seems relatively reasonable to me

might ask if they do a little port and polish

I believe theres very little to be gain with porting and polishing, better off putting this towards your cams, or valve seats and stems refresh. Those prices sound good though for the work you've been quoted.

happy days then.

spoke with volkspares also - inlet valves are £8.21+vat each and exhaust valves are £14.79+vat each

so looking at about £110 all in if my maths serves me right.

all valve guides are £4+vat so that is £60

you might be right - for the cost of valves, and guides i may get one or two ports polished

Best thing you can use for clean is petrol.

Neat petrol in a tray, brush it well in with a paint brush and wash it off. Jizer is not a problem at all and don't worry about getting it inside the bores it's water washable, and you'll be using plenty of fresh engine oil in the rebuild process anyway. I hope!

Take it from an old school mechanic mate, I've jizzed on many an engine from small cars to mainly heavy diesel HGVs. The amount of 12 litre MAN engines I've built using old school methods and I've never had a problem.

Get stuck in and reap the rewards when your done

Also, wire wheels on a cordless drill will shift the rust from the castings nicely, ive done this with land rover gearboxes a few times.
