dj-madman 146
Guys, i currently have my engine stripped down to just the block ( sump, pistons and Crank will be removed tomorrow) the engine is filthy, covered in Gunk, oil, Grime, it is on there thick. my aim is to paint the block, but i need it cleaning first. can anyone recommend anywhere that would clean it? maybe even what process to go for? i have read about a hot chemical bath to eat all the crud off the external without damaging the internal. all help would be greatly appreciated. here is a side on pic of the block how she stands now. c00k 435
if you want to go DIY get in there an scrub to be honest mate, foam degreaser or thinners and a scouring pad 1st.get all the grim and muck off, then give it a good jet wash.this will remove minimal rust aswell.dry block thoroughly inside and out.Depending if you wish to remove all rust,I would use a flap wheel on a drill, get a few different sizes as it make it easier to get all areas.then once it all removed give the whole out side block a sand by hand. with about 320 grit.apply some kind of chemical rust treatment / prevention for bare metal.Paint with high temperature paint. lightly sand between layers. 600-800 grit.Spraying will give a much better and more even finish than hand painting. Make sure not to get any paint on the gasket surfaces or on the inside of the block.I would sandwage it between two pieces of wood, to stop damage to gasket surfaces as welland make sure all holes are fill in the block before painting.if you want it done professionally you mite be able to get it acid dipped or get the out side media blasted.Media blasting is softer than sand blasting or shot blasting, they use nut shells, but will remove all rust. Then maybe electroplated. Then some kind of high temperature paint, high temp powder coat or ceramic coating. It all depends on budget really.I'm not sure if you can electroplate an engine block, as I think it would coat the inside of the bore as well, you might be able to if you had a re-bore afterwards. dj-madman 146
Cheers for that mate.Iv got all the paint in spray cans already. High temp up to 600degI haven't had a go at it yet. Just waiting to find someone to pressure test the block and head first. Friend of the family runs his own machine shop and engine specialist so waiting to see what he quotes. As well as calling someone local on Monday. If they throw an acid dip in then happy days, if not ill certainly get cracking. I take it there is no problem in using water within the block itself then? As it will drip dry anyway. As for gasket surfaces and holes, I have plenty of masking/duct tape so all bare metal surfaces would get taped off in preparation Sent from my GT-I9505 using Tapatalk martingraham
dj-madman 146
Right little update. Took the block and head to my local engine machinist. To pressure test, clean and hone the block it's going to cost £100To pressure test, clean and skim if needed the head it will cost £115So 215 notes in total. I don't think that's too sad to be honestSent from my GT-I9505 using Tapatalk VR6Pete

dj-madman 146
It's cool. The red is from Halfords vht paint. And the white I got off of Amazon as well as the lacquer. Both made by hycote. Reasonably priced on there tooSent from my GT-I9505 using Tapatalk
Treva1990 17
Nice work Im currently stripping the ancillaries off the engine and cleaning it to paint. I will not be stripping the engine completely as that is past my knowledge and i don't want to f**k it up. I have put rags in the holes of the inlet, exhaust, oil breather and such. Will it be ok to jet wash if i don't aim at the rags. If if not any idea how i can jet wash the engine after scrubbing and degreasing? martingraham
