Guys,

 

just tried running a search for "Newman Cams" and didnt return anything.

so im wondering if anyone knows of these cams? have tried them? have them running?

 

basically Newman Cams are a little outfit just on the outskirts of Bromley.

Drive past them loads of times and was thinking that maybe a bespoke outfit like these would be better than the mass-producers of the world?

im going to be looking at getting new cams pretty soon whilst my engine is stripped down.

was going to jump right in the deep end and but them but i thought it is best to check peoples opinions etc.

Someone has to buy these things for opinions to be formed in the first place mate.

If your happy with the specs and prices, I say go for it. At least you know it's a local company that can offer you face to face after sales back up should you need it

to be honest all the numbers about lift degree etc etc baffle me. i dont know what is good and what is pony.

my main question is what would be better for performance and a couple extra horses? these newman cams or a schrick cam to the same spec?

Looking at the tech sheet it says 268 and 288 cams won't run on standard injection.

Is this right?

I'm sure people are running bigger schrick cams and same injection? Or have they upgraded?

I think most run 268 with a remap mate, vr6pete (the gaffer) has 268 in his corrado I think

Mg bad the specs at Newman are 270 and 288 lol

I'll have to have a chat with them and see what they've changed, can't see why 270 wouldn't run on normal injection system with a remap

Shouldn't do.

You will get a higher flow with a 4 bar.

So with cams and re-map should work well.

Maybe a decent panel air filter.

Main thing is re-map to set it all up correctly.

Early spec corrado VR6 came with 4 bar fuel set up from factory, later spec all came with 3 bar.

So VR6 fuelling system will run fine at 4 bars all day long

Sweet.

I'll have a look and see what I can find with regards to upgrades. Saying that I do have an obd1 lump here also. Would that have 4 bar off the top of your head?

Now just to decide on the cam I want lol

Depends what age OBD1 engine is it, some do some don't. If got a dizzy cap (not coilpack) it should have, but not definite as pervious owner could of swapped it.

Just check it, it's on the end of the fuel rail.

If it may say 3 or 4 bar on it.

If it doesn't it will definitely have a part number on it. And the google part numbers and 3 and 4 bars have different part numbers.

So the better mk4 golfs with BAM engine, Audi TT's, older S3's, S4's.

A6's with 2.7t, 2.8, 3.0.

So loads to choose from

Can get them new from VW or TPS.

I'd recommend a German Bosch one,

Same as a genuine VW.

Cheaper eBay ones are meant to be shit.

I'd rather a 2nd hand genuine VW, than a cheaper eBay version.

i wouldnt buy a cheap third party one anyway. nothing but hassle.

 

for my rebuild it has all been original VW parts from the parts department. valves, guides, piston rings, chains, chain guides, oil pump, pickup pipe, all gaskets. just to name a few. should have totalled over 1k in parts but the fella in beadles gave me 50% off because we were talking about what im doing. he too restores old VWs he said "its about time more people took time over the older (better) vag vehicles" so win win lol
