drakey91 0
HI guys, Not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I am currently looking into buying this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1997-VOLKSWAGEN-GOLF-VR6-HIGHLINE-MULBERRY-LIMITED-EDITION-/231478963718?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item35e538ae06 What would be your opinion? What should I be looking for? Thanks R
KieranH 30
Oo, I saw this one, but I want a 3 door model, as I am also looking to buy one. Only thing to note would be the door trim is missing on the drivers side. EDIT: Also I've seen Golf VR6 5 door in better condition go for for a few hundred quid lower. drakey9101 3
Ahh yes. The door trim is included within the sale. Other than that not convinced it's a high line though which is a bit disappointing. Where have you seen cheaper ones? This didn't sell last time it was on eBay, he dropped the price to £1595 last time.
bennyk 1,238
Looks nice to me, apart from the aftermarket lights, easy and cheap to change back though. That interior looks mint, one of, if not the best mulberry leather I've seen! Description seems good, gives the impression it's not been owned by idiots! I'd say go and have a look and check for the usual Mk3 rust issues. Bealieboy

Bealieboy 1,625
Yeah, I like the look of this one too. Nice to have a standard car to add your own artistic licence to! This ones a bonafide highline! Edited February 14, 2015 by Bealieboy
drakey9101 3
Going to be a tough one to look at as I live about 4 1/2 hours away from it. Might just have to see if he can send more pictures and see what he'll take. Where should I be looking for rust? Bealieboy
Bealieboy 1,625
Rust:- bottom of the front wings, on the sills right by the bottom of the front wings, the wings collect crap off the rd and rot and that spreads to the sills. Also there's what look like drain bungs on the floor pan and they tend to rot also. The tailgate and bottom of the doors, sometimes top of windscreen and finally rear arches. Is that all of the car? Earwig 89
A few things that put me off it from first glance... Front and rear badges I do not think are from a Highline. Door cards on a highline are ribbed where your elbow sits. As in there is stitching running along them. I don't see that on this. I also don't recall a highline having the plastic sill covers running along the sides... There is already rust on the tailgate, which would indicate a high likelihood of rust elsewhere.... Underneath that you cannot see. But having said all that. It does have some other highline bits, such as the gearknob and centre console. Climate control is rare, even in a highline so that's a plus point but I cannot see the dash to verify it. I guess if it's a 4 1/2 hour drive for you but you like the car, I would at the very least ask to get some photo's of the underside of the car. The sills and front jacking points would be a minimum. Hope this helps in some way :-)
drakey9101 3
Front a rear badges are what made me question whether it's a high line or not tbh. Didn't know about the door cards. Thanks for all your advice guys.
Gwr corrado 189
All of these things that you lads are mentioning are new to me . Has anyone ever done aPost on things to look for ?? Eg the door cards you have mentioned and badges etc ??
drakey9101 3
Yeah there is a buyers guide on here that mentions badges, centre console and so on for high line v standard. Gwr corrado
daveyboy 897
The vr6 badges aren't highline one but the vw badge in the boot is. Now there could be a simple explanation for that. They could of been stolen. Now I'm not totally sure on the door cards, I thought they were ribbed, I know the colour concept ones weren't obviously this ain't a colour concept as they were just in the GTI range. It still looks like a good fairly genuine and untouched base to start with The Duke
dom.joy 87
Comes up as a highline on My Car Check

I think I'd probably hpi check it first. It might of had new doors and door cards replaced. Edited February 19, 2015 by VR6CABBS
VR6Pete 1,455
Yes oy way to validate it is a high line is from the log book. You can always look on the reg online on the tax and vehicle insurance database.
drakey9101 3
Log book has verified it as a Highline. The chap selling it is selling in behalf of a friend. How much should I look to be paying for it? Still waiting for pics of sills and so on. VR6Pete
The Duke 27
I don't think the car looks to bad to me just needs a bit tlc, looks like it's been fairly well maintained and it's low millage too. The price seems fair if the wings and sills etc come back in good nick but you've always got to get a few quid off
drakey9101 3
If I could get it for less than £1400 what would anyone say?
Earwig 89
If it was pretty much rot free then sure, does not seem bad. If however you need to replace the sills and any of the floor you could be looking at a £1k bill in a worst case scenario.... Just look over it carefully.
jaydubb13 0
Good deal how do u buy a car on eBay is that a dumb question? Do you live in the sellers area
drakey9101 3
Err I am no where near it that's the problem tbh as I would obviously prefer to look over it myself first. Listing ends tonight so I'll see if I can arrange something for next weekend.
