rsweeney 40
I'm looking at changing the piston rings on my 1994 vr6 at the same time as doing the head gasket & cylinder head rebuild but needed to check ,do you need to renew the bolts that hold the big end bearing caps on ?and is it worth replacing the bearings at the same time? its only on 70k
ibs 308
I didn't change my bolts but I did replace the bearing caps when I recently did mine. It does not mention anywhere in the Bentley manual about having to change the bolts either.
rsweeney 40
Ok cheers mate!I'm tempted to just change the bearings then but was there a reason you changed the bearing caps as well? Just imagine they would be quite expensive ! Edited March 9, 2015 by rsweeney

Jimjon 28
I didn't change my bolts but I did replace the bearing caps when I recently did mine. It does not mention anywhere in the Bentley manual about having to change the bolts either. On page 13.32 its notes the bolts as item no. 5 and says always replace. Going to check my receipt for my bottom end and see if they were replaced or not.

The bolt they are talking about is the crankshaft pulley bolt.
Jimjon 28
Maybe we are looking at different things, I remember my other Peter Russek manual saying to replace them ibs
