Golf mk3 VR6 starter motor doesn't spin

Recommended Posts

Hi!  I have to apologize my confusing explanation but I hope so much that someone can help me…

I have an issue with my Golf mk3 VR6 -92 (automatic transmission). The starter motor doesn’t spin at all.

In briefly, first I had an issue that I didn’t get any signal from ECU but starter motor was spinning and motor cranked.

So the missing signal issue was fixed by checking the adapters and wire harnesses of the fuse box, and one wire harness were not connected well.

Connecting that wire harness well, I got signal from ECU, but then the starter motor didn't spin at all and if there is some starting relay it’s not “tapping”. And there wasn't any faulty codes from ECU.

We found one loosen red-yellow wire with red adapter near of the bottom right corner of the fuse box and we connected it to one empty big red adapter’s one point. The big red adapter has 3 places to put the red-yellow wire. This big adapter belongs to fuse box and its location is the bottom right corner of the fuse box if I remember right now.

And BTW the battery was full.

I don’t know what to do now. I have many questions.

1.       Can the starter motor just break down in couple hours without giving any clear signs of breaking down?

2.       Can the bottom of the ignition just break down suddenly?

3.       Does this age VR6 has some parking relay or/and start relay?

4.       What is that red-yellow wire?

Have you tried manually giving power to the starter motor and see if it turns? That will rule out lots of things. Yes starter motors often fail with absolutely no warning.

Maybe you could loosely follow Dan J Reed's guide on this one: http://faculty.ccp.edu/faculty/dreed/Campingart/jettatech/nocrankdiag/index.htm

But bearing in mind that is not written for a VR6 engine, and also remember you could cause an explosion or fire if you don't do things correctly, or run yourself over... !

Also you probably know this but remember that the multifunction switch on the automatic gearbox will block the starter motor if the car is in R, D, 3, 2 or 1.
