HopefulVr6 10
In 1997 the engine cover got changed from "VR6-DOHC" to "VR6-2.8" Anyone got a definitive reason as to why Volkswagen did this? This has been asked before, but no real reason given: http://www.vr6oc.com/forum/topic/23872-engine-vr6-dohc-vs-vr6-28/
B4VR6 193
All vw's after 97 had the engine capacity on the engine covers. And still do. Probably just to tie it in with the rest.
HopefulVr6 10
Winner! Never heard that one before - but it's by far the most plausible explanation
B4VR6 193
That's just my take on it.
HopefulVr6 10
It sounds very logical though, because none of the other reasons have stacked up or made sense. I guess VW will have one manufacturer of these covers and when submitted the change the VR6 engine cover got included.
science 7
Even though it has 2 over head cams it's not really a DOHC engine, more like a 2xSOHC design.
HopefulVr6 10
I've heard that one before too but can't understand why VW would bother changing it for just 1 year and I doubt there was any legal ramification. I think B4VR6s idea would sound more logical if they were just geting all the covers changed as part of a policy decision. Maybe worth a letter to Germany, only costs a sheet of paper and a few stamps
