Not been much to report lately.  Got my oil feed and drain lines sorted.  Had all my engine bits back from the powder coaters so I can start putting everything back together!   Had my Brembo calipers

Got my carpets back in today. Like new to say the least. Really happy with how they turned out. Popped door are and seats back in. Took her for a test drives and things seem to be good. Just nee

So had the donor car delivered straight away and started stripping it!   Then Michael turned up to return my Ross Tech cable he stole and he left with half the engine bits.  As it turns out he bought

All I can say is thank God I opted for ARP bolts as this head has been off and on so many times today!  Pissing me right off!

Struggling with the bloody timing!  Think the spacer may be too big.  Its giving me 5mm between block and head!  I can get all the timing lined up but the top chain is really tight on all 3 areas!

Other than that though its coming along painted the block in matt black, sump off ready to be welded, ARP rod bolts done today!

Pissed of so if anyone can suggest anything lol!!  All greatly appreciated!

Here's a bit of information for you.  If using the Victor Reinz head gasket please go for the 1.6mm Space plate.  If you purchase a 3mm plate as I have that gasket may be a little thick.  You will need to order the 021 103 383 N.  Drill the rivets out and replace the centre section with your spacer!

Will keep you posted

Who do you use for powder coating buddy?

That spacer looks a fair size mate..... 4mm?

Its a 3mm bud!

I use dragon powder coaters http://www.dragonpowdercoating.co.uk/

Recommended to me bya pal of mine who is a civic and vag nut lol but he has loads done there.

Dropped my brembos, top chain cover, alternator bracket & rear engine mount in to be done in brilliant white and he said roughly £80 sheets!

Wasted more than that on gaskets this week alone F**K sake hahahaha!

Well nothing much to report really still waiting on bits from the powder coaters...

Got the oil feed adapter fitted which was an eBay special about £11 seems a solid thing

Was also given for FREE a Holset HX35 Cummins Turbo.  I know a lot of people are running these and posting some great figures!  I test fitted it to the engine and it sits a whopping 13" from the head on the manifold.  I have a funny feeling this thing is going to be to big????

I am trying to see if I am better just buying a new turbo or save myself a few hundred notes and have this one rebuilt!!!!

I saw a bmw e30 on a YouTube vid and the fella had swapped his holset hx35 turbo out for a smaller garret as he said he got a fair bit of lag and then woof, tyre smoking boost.

Yes that's what I mean although what engine was in the e30? My mate had that turbo bolted to his 1.6 civic fuck sake

Finally got my block bare but looking for a good deal on better Pistons, rods and cams. My vr6 budget has took a beating this past few month

I am running standard rods and Pistons. Building for 350-400 this time. When my engine that's in the car is out I will start another build but that will be a long winded expensive number hahaha

Think I might do that I was planning on running the one in the car and doing this up but it is a good idea to sort this out and spend the real money on the other that way I know I can enjoy the car.

Don't get me wrong this one has cost me a few quid so far especially for the donor car at £1150 delivered. But I have made about £600 back on other bits.

I don't like being without the car in summer so hopefully this engine will go in through winter and last until the next one is built. . That will be a forged bottoms end.

So far I have spent around 5000 on the car including buying the car, equipment for jobs and tools, and the donor engine. I have been pricing a forged bottom end and replacing everything with schimmel parts but the reality is I have 2 holidays booked and a stag do and a wedding so I am no making tough choices think I will take a leaf out of your book and recondition this engine to a good standard then I know the engine is spot on and save the forged schimmel engine for next winter project when I have less going on.

As back in the thread I did the wedding thing a few years back hahaha!  Expensive hobby that my next one will certainly be cheaper!!!  I ave a registered scrap yard in my back garden, another in Wales and a garage in Wales my tools are pretty much covered.  I have started turbo builds before and proved I can't be without the car.  This way I can get a bit extra poke and get my car back quick.  Then I can build a monster in my own time when finances allow.  Wife and 3 daughters are with out a doubt my most expensive items :).  The only downside is I will have to buy all the ARP bolts twice.  However it will add value to the current engine when I come to sell it!

You pretty much have it covered I don't even have any car guy mates near where I live so it's the forum and you tube for me an that's as good as it gets

Best way mate 12 years ago before I started my business and had these places, I never held a spanner in my life.  I bought my first VR it had 250K Miles on the clock.  The head gasket went....  Phoned VW specialist and they quoted £800 to do the job parts and materials to do it!  I paid £400 for the car hahaha.  Mrs was not impressed and at the time we couldn't afford that kind of expense.  So I turned to this forum as a paid member and downloaded the PDF workshop manual for the engine.  Studied it and guides of people doing chains on here.  Popped the car in the garage and attempted that shit myself.  Had a member off here on the phone as back up.....  Two days later the car was running again!!

The only mechanics I have paid since are the ones who work for me and they are not allowed to touch my VR!
