[moved] Question on superchargers...

Recommended Posts

Rigth, thinking that Im gonna keep my golf for quite some time, therefore need to think about the best ways to get more power, which is much needed! For those who dont know, I've got a '96 Golf VR6, totally std. with @45K on the clock.

Im looking at the supercharger route seriously at the mo, but wonder if you could fill me in on some of the details. As Im not very handy, id be looking at paying to get the full job done, so how much is this likely to cost me? Is there anything else that should be changed at the same time? Is this a better route to go than a big turbo? Would I be as well considering the option of a conversion?.... bit confused to be honest! lol...

Appreciate any advice you may be able to offer on the subject...

cheers :)

should see you about 40-50 bhp ?

I've been told that a six sped box is the way to go !! Looks like a quaife six speed costs less than a supercharger aswell.

Going to Crail on Sunday ??

I'd agree with that idea.. looks like the six speed will be my final mod.

Am I not allowed to give advice on Superchargers these days Olly? :(

I've got the z-eng. kit on my corrado which produced 274 bhp on the rolling road so it does give a genuine 70-80 hp increase for £2k but its all at mid-high revs power. The z-kit is very simple to fit as there are no oil lines, the vf-kit a bit more involved but ultimately more upgradeable. Not too sure on turbos but they seem to be popular in the US but not as widely available in the UK. The supercharger kit is bolt-on (cheap and easy to fit), produces reliable power and can be removed easily which appealed to me.

I was talking to Jules and Mina at the rr day, and they both seemed to be of the opinion that it wasnt quite as simple as pay 2K to slap on a supercharger and off you go.

I remember Jules saying he blasted his way through several head gaskets before he found some suitable head bolts, for example. Other components will need uprating to cope with the extra power.

The other issue is that of traction in a FWD with 250+ bhp. Ive heard mention of an LSD needed.

Although i have heard the six speed box is an excellent upgrade for NA VRs, their benefit may be undone with forced induction due to the fact the power only really kicks in at 4000rpm+. The long gearing of the original VR gearbox should complement this. This is the case with turbos anyway, and i would have thought this is similar with s/c....

(Waits to be shot down over all above points)

If your car is mapped properly, the engine should hold ok with a stock SC kit. Its when things go wrong, like pinging or running lean, that head gaskets start to blow. You just need one sensor to stop working and off it goes.

Recall that on the RR, my car was came up on Vince's screen as "shagged" - I'm telling you, my car is cursed! %-6

Mina - 317bhp (SC + many mods)

Ben - 274bhp (SC + no modes)

Simey - 274bhp (SC + vgi)

Jules - 236bhp - ar$e

I think my engine is in backwards.

My Thermo blew and I was too late realising..

hence I have now had to replace my ENTIRE water cooling system because everything got too hot and burst..

You gotta REALLY be on top of things all of the time.

my 3.1 developed just shy of 240bhp in standard form , and 276bhp once tweaked! that was before it dropped a valve b4 xmas :-( ! dunno what sort of power it would produce once charged, but i imagine it'd be quick if possible to do!

If you really want a charger - be prepared to spend £££s on uprating a few other things, like brakes, engine mounts, clutch, exhaust, water injection etc. I'd strongly recommend a Vortech Charger as they are upgradeable. I'm currently in conversation with Dean at VDUBN -http://www.vdubn.com - he's going to supply me some nice bits for my charger which should see my engine push out around 380bhp.......just what the doctor ordered!!

once again folks - thanks again for all the advice, I really appreciate it... makes sense that when thinking about doing things like this you speak to people who have the necessary experience - so thanks.

If I charge it, its gonna need to be done right, so if anything else needs done at the same time then I'll be putting the job off till I can afford to do it properly.

Dont think Ill be going down the 3.0 route as any mods I do I want to be easily reversible - just so that I can take her back to standard form should I wish to do so.. but thanks for the suggestion anyways dude :)

Marco... 'kin desperate to go to crail, but Sunday is out due to the fact that Im moving house on Monday, therefore muchos packin and sh!t to do all weekend... b@stard :( Anyway, any time I go to crail now ill need to tell the missus im going elsewhere, thanks to all of the wee f@nnies on that crail TV programme last week talking about crail being all about "cars and burdz".... lol, soon as the missus saw all of the lovely ladies on tellie errrrmm... getting "things" out? %-6 that was that... "you'll no be going to any Crail thrash!!!" Aw well, thats what lies are for... ;) lmao 8o)

yeeha, I'd agree with Mina when s/c'd other things need to be uprated as well and that's expensive. Out of all the VW engines the VR6 is the most expensive to modify.

But all the marshalls at Goodwood say my VR sounds the best :)
