rsweeney 40
double check but I remember reading in the bentley manual that the auto boxes (096 and 01M) used on the vr6's are the same as used on some smaller engined golfs. what's wrong with yours? you can get the rebuilt to give peace of mind or try ebay Edited November 16, 2015 by rsweeney Mr A
Mr A 0
Hi I've been to auto gearbox specialist and been told it's a combination of things torque converter is binding and problem with valve block and was quoted £2000 Thanks for your findings
rsweeney 40
My auto box was awful when i got the car. It was in limp mode and needed attention. by the sounds of it you can quite easily sort your problems out. If your remove the gearbox you will get to the torque converter and there are many companies which recondition these, i used these guys and they were great http://www.automatic-gearbox.co.uk/ costing roughly £150. My wiring harness on the valve body had snapped so needed replacing, very easy to do just 4 bolts to remove the sump and then you have access. If the valve body has issues you can remove it quite easily following this guide http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?3780457-Auto-Clean-Valve-Body-DIY another useful link for changing the oil and filter - http://www.deylan.co.uk/golf/096%20Fluid%20Change/index.htm Its very do able if you take your time Mr A and thesurgeon

iaevans 0
I have recently swapped an automatic box out of my 1997 VR6 Highline for an manual 5 speed. I believe the box was fine, just the torque converter worn out. Contact me if you want more info. Ian
Mr A 0
Hi Ian could you give my some more info please about gearbox, And how much would you want for gearbox. Mark
iaevans 0
Hi Mark, my VR6 had done 85k miles on the auto box. The torque converter was slipping, that why I changed both the box and converter. I was hoping for £200, that would allow you to get it reconditioned for a reasonable cost. I also have a new gearbox filter and oil which you can have. It would need to be collected as very heavy.
