VR6Andy 0 Posted April 1, 2004 Report Share Posted April 1, 2004 Ok Vr techno wizards, question time, I have a 96 VR and its developed a small oil leak in the garage. I have looked under the bonnet and found that a cap similar to the one for the oil filter which is at the front lower part of the block is the culprit. I can only describe it as this and it faces the rad, i have visited the local VAG parts dept who informed me that this requires the same seal as the oil filter housing, i have purchased this at 2 quid.A friend has told me that this cap/cover is probably a blanking plate for the older model??? Does this sound about right and when i drop the oil and remove this cover will the seal fit ??? Cheers in advance. Link to post Share on other sites

I dont know whether some are different but mine is an internal filter not the metal screw on types. i have been wondering if this cap if for an old type oil filter. Link to post Share on other sites

When you undo that big bolt that faces the rad, the whole oil cooler will come away from the block. speedo 0 Posted April 1, 2004 Report Share Posted April 1, 2004 yep its the cooler housing. Good luck if you have A/C.... you`ll cut the back of your hands to shreds. The easist thing to do (if i wer u) is move the front bumper forward, by undoing all the fixings. It dont take 2 mins, and gives you lots more room. While you are in that area, its worth changing the oil cooler coolant pipes aswell, as the tend to burst when moved.. Link to post Share on other sites
nickbee 1 Posted April 2, 2004 Report Share Posted April 2, 2004 There are two seals in the oil cooler and two pipes connected to it (one of the latter being the reason my car's off the road).Replacing the whole set is something like £15 from VW - well worth doing the whole lot at once. andysteele 0 Posted April 5, 2004 Report Share Posted April 5, 2004 same thing happen to mine a few months back, pissing oil all over the place.... just had to replace the two oil cooler seals and its all fine now, even runs a few degrees cooler!the only problem was in getting the parts from my local dealer, they had one of the two, but said there wasnt any of the other in the UK, had to wait over a week to get the other flown in!!!! but the cost was small...
