JakeP 53
Right I have my block out and have taken out the Pistons to be checked and it seems they aren't in the best of conditions and I am getting the block honed , decked , crank polished , new big ends and would like to replace the Pistons. But to get new standard Pistons is either the same or more expensive than some of the forged Pistons out there ... Would using forged Pistons on standard rods be okay or would I need forged rods too? Any advice would be appreciated thanks guys
ky_uk 304
If your gonna spend money on forged Pistons I would recommend you buy yourself a decent set of con rods just make sure you buy the right size and the right compression, are you staying N/A or going boosted ? http://www.tsr-performance.com Check out that place for parts it's pretty good on prices JakeP
JakeP 53
Going boosted and yeah ive been on tsr recently and thinking of getting the wossner low comp pistons from there for £780 if im not mistaken , what rods would you recommend ? and one more question, I want my block honed, decked, crank balanced and polished with new bearings but I cant find a machine shop near me that wants to go near the vr block :/ Edited February 9, 2016 by JakeP
ky_uk 304
I got the wossner low comp Pistons had my block bored out at 82.5 so it will be a 3.0 VR6T, I am buying a set of the rods on there website. Good luck finding a shop it took me weeks of phone calls to get one.
JakeP 53
Ah I see, Im looking to stay at 81mm bore , seeing as i live in wales, It will probably have to be sent over to england, are there any known machinists in england that would carry out work on a vr6 block that you know of? ky_uk 304
Sorry I can't help, if you look on the member map you could see other members in Wales and hopefully someone can help you mate.
six appeal 53
If you want Wossner and PEC stuff, try VRT. (VRTonline.co.uk) They are the cheapest I've found in the UK for this stuff. Mention me and you might even get a further discount! One thing I would recommend is speaking to the machine shop BEFORE you have any work done on the block, or buy the pistons! They can advise then on what size pistons would be best for your block once machined, can be a costly mistake if the block ends up being too big for your pistons once you've had it sorted! Simon. JakeP 53
Yeah that's a good shout , thanks for the site and if I do buy them off there I'll mention your name ! Just about finding a machine shop that will do it haha !
six appeal 53
There's a really good machine shop near to them that I use when building my engines, miles from you though http://cmesuk.com/ Classic and Modern Engine Services 18/20 Great Hollands Square Bracknell Berks RG12 8UX 01344 488853 Hope that helps. JakeP 53
Well as long as I can send it on a pallet to them and pay for return delivery I should be okay , I'll have to get in touch with them , thanks for the info mate six appeal
six appeal 53
No problem mate, Happy to assist It's a proper old school race engine engineering company, so they can be a blunt on the phone so bear with them, but they are the best i've used in over 20 years of engine modding/building. JakeP 53
Haha don't worry I know the sort of people , got a lot of similar people around me telling me they don't want to go near me block , as soon as I tell an engineering /machine shop it's a vr they stay well away six appeal
six appeal 53
Well I've had them do 2 VR blocks and also the heads for me, and one for a very good friend. They strengthened the crank (Plasma Nitride) and other bits for me too as well as completely assembling the crank/rod and pistons on my Low Comp engine whilst it was in there, so they are well versed in the VR6! JakeP 53
Ah they sound the bollocks then to be fair , when I get some time I'll give them a ring and ask for them about what I want done , don't suppose they can balance the crank too ? six appeal
six appeal 53
I didn't ask to have mine done mate to be honest as I'd read good and bad reports on having it all done to do with the Harmonics of the VR engine, but sure they can advise you if its worth while and if they can do it. JakeP 53
Thanks for all the advice mate really appreciate it , was worrying about finding anywhere to get the block done lol so it's helped me quite a bit cheers six appeal
RBPE 198
Do a bit of research for your application too.... these fallacies you hear about "cast pistons rattle less than forged" is nonsense so make sure you choose wisely. Many aftermarket one's will be 4032 alloy but some will be 2618 which give more rattle due to thermal expansion/physical properties differences, in fact I've read some reports that show although 4032 is somewhat less tough and has less overall thermal resilience it handle's the sustained thermal stresses akin to engine cycle loads better than 2618. I would prefer any bore n hones to be well versed in these things in terms of size, gas blow by, heat/cooling cycles etc In short, as an engine build centres on micro-mm variables then I would like a builder to know these things because i'm a PITA and I'll pass that on to my oc homies! http://www.enginelabs.com/engine-tech/pistons/tech5-trey-mcfarland-of-mahle-motorsports-reveals-piston-secrets/ Edited February 21, 2016 by RBPE VR6CABBS and Bealieboy
