Volkswagen celebrates the 40th birthday of the Golf GTI by introducing the new TCR version, which is intended exclusively for the racetrack.VW Golf GTI TCR - 01
Based on a production four-door GTI, the racing version is jointly developed by Volkswagen Motorsport and Seat to compete in the TCR International Series. The car looks mostly the same as the Race Car concept and given its purpose has been equipped with a special aerodynamic add-ons, including a massive front splitter, extended wheel arches, a ventilated hood, revised side skirts, sporty rear bumper and a striking carbon rear wing for optimal handling. It rides on 18-inch racing wheels wrapped in Michelin tires, while the chassis is roughly 40 cm wider than the production Golf. There’s also prominent, red “GTI” badges on the front grille and on the rear of the car. Volkswagen didn’t provide any photos of the interior, but only says the Golf GTI TCR has a racing seat with head protectors and racing safety cage.

Under the hood is a turbo 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with direct fuel injection, from the Golf R. The racing version delivers 330 hp(243 kW) at 6,200 rpm and 410 Nm of torque at 2,500 rpm (302 lb-ft). Power is delivered to the front wheels via a six-speed sequential racing gearbox, which has steering wheel mounted paddle shifters. Thus equipped the racing version of the Volkswagen Golf GTI sprints from 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.2 seconds, while top speed is at 230 km/h (142 mph).
The Golf GTI TCR also comes equipped with adjustable front McPherson and an adjustable rear Multilink suspension, revised steering system and a high-performance braking system with all-around inside ventilation. The ones on the front measure 362 mm, while the ones in the rear 310 mm.
Volkswagen will only build only 20 examples, and all have already been sold to teams for the FIA’s 2016 Touring Car Racing International series.
