Asked when the Golf R 400 will go on sale, Volkswagen’s Head of Global Product Communications Dominik Hoberg for the magazine Drive says: “There might be a surprise coming. The company this year is celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Golf GTI. Be surprised in May or June. Let’s see what will happen.” He also hinted the surprise “will be something fast”, but he did not want to confirm whether that surprise will be the ultimate high-performance Golf.Golf R400 Concept-010

As a reminder, the Golf R 400 was originally unveiled in 2014 and features a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with a massive turbo pumping out a huge 400 hp and 450Nm (332 lb ft) of torque. Matched with a six-speed DSG transmission and a 4Motion all-wheel drive system the car sprints from standstill to 0–100 km/h (0-62 mph) in less than 4 seconds. The top speed is electronically-limited to 280 km/h (174 mph).Golf R400 Concept-02
But now have emerged new reports from Germany, which suggest that company instead of the 2.0-liter four-cylinder could use a new five-cylinder, 2.5-liter powertrain borrowed from the Audi RS3. According to other rumors the highly-anticipated hot hatch could receive a performance boost, which will enable additional 20 horsepower or total of 420.
