VR6OC News Bot 30
Auction house Bonhams will offer a unique Benetton-Ford Formula 1 car, which dates from the 1991-92 World Championship racing seasons. Engineered by John Barnard, chassis “06” is particularly special because it was the car that great seven-times Formula 1 World Champion Michael Schumacher scored the first of his 155 podiums finish in it. Martin Brundle made his debut in it, while Nelson Piquet completed his last Grand Prix in it at the Australian GP at the end of 1991. The car debuted at the 1991 Hungarian Grand Prix on Aug. 11, whereas three-times Formula 1 World Champion Driver Nelson Piquet drove the car, qualifying 11th fastest out of 34 cars. In march 1992, a young star driver from Germany made his debut in it. Michael Schumacher qualified third and finished third in his first-ever F1 grand prix. Schumi then followed up that performance by qualifying fifth fastest and once again finished third for the Brazilian Grand Prix at Interlagos. That was also the last time the Benetton-Ford F1 car was raced and after that it was retired from active service. Power is provided by 72-degree 3.5-liter Ford V8 engine, which connected to a Benetton-made six-speed gearbox delivers 730 hp and can rev up all the way to 13,800 rpm. The car also has a pushrod-actuated all independent suspension, front and rear. This stunning Benetton B191 will be auctioned in Monaco on May 13th, and is expected to fetch between $250,000 and $320,000. View the full article
