Will i be happy with a vr6 coming from jap?

Recommended Posts

Hi..im new on here. Just signed up today. The question is will i be happy with a vr6? Looking at getting a mk3 vr6 obd2 is it? Not got a clue on these engines at all, ive always had jap, scoobys and rx7 and now im back in an import sti running 340bhp...now i know the vr6 isnt a patch on the scoob in performance but will i be happy with one? How reliable are they? I know the bodys rust and alot look like a cullinder with a 2.8 strapped to it..but some scoobys are like that aswel so im used to is. And im pretty anal when it comes to body work....i dont mind buying one with bodywork needed as i can get that sorted, but it will stay that way when its done as like i said im anal haha. What are they like on juice? Motorway driving? My scoob is shite on the mororway as is a short ratio box and screems at 70mph! But i do love it! So im stuck between them both...im in the north west area if anybody fancies taking me for a quick passenger ride? Wigan/bolton area? Help what should i do? What are the MAIN things to look out for when buying one?

A lot of people sell their VR6's and go to other cars in the same performance bracket only to come back to the VR6.

I've just strapped a supercharger to my Corrado VR6 - 294BHP which isn't far off STI - with different gearing (3.68 final drive) and you have machine that will out accelerate a lot of cars! and cost me about 1k in total for charger + map.

Of course there are plenty of Mk2 Golf conversions which would have a power to weight benefit, or even a R32 conversion are not too bad these days.

Motorway driving - I get around 36MPG so its not too bad, and that's with my final drive and super charger, they are not too bad pottering about BUT the peddle is very addictive :)

Recommend looking at our buyers guide, there are still plenty of decent MK3's but avoid earlier types as typically they rust behind plastic arches etc... and check turrets and floor pans / sills etc...

Mechanically and like with any car of its age, you will have the "usual" jobs Chains, head gasket, valve guides etc... on higher mileage cars if it has had a hard life in the past - if you shop around then there are cars with most of these jobs done already.

There are many specialists around such as Stealth Racing UK who I highly recommend for any work / tuning needs etc..

I'm sure others will offer some good advise in addition to the above too :)

Pete

Wow thanks for that info and the quick reply. Well im bidding on a mk3 vr6 now, 1996, is that one of the better models? Its got 107000 miles and has got 14 stamps but the bodywork is tatty, got a hole in the lower wing and rust on the arches, which can get sorted and i know a few bodyshops that will do a great job, but the problem is im bidding on it blind really as its a 3hour drive for me to just view it..iv asked alot of questions about rust and leaking, he said there is no rust in the boot floor pan, no leaking in the sunroof and no visable signs of coolant leaking, but he did say thers abit of oil in the front of the engine but its not fresh oil and its starts cold fine with no noises, hes a trader so his word has to be true if he wants good feedbackmand his feedback is good. Last service was done at 84k and has done 107000 now but hasnt been on the road since last september but he starts it regular and it drives fine, if i can get it cheap enough then il carry out some of the mechanical jobs for piece of mind anyway...its a 5 door in metalic burgundy with the supposably "rare" recaro interior

Would always recommend to view before handing over any money.

Do you have the link to the ebay item?

Recaro's are desirable but not that rare to be honest :)

Have you looked at our for sale section and "VR6OC Classifieds" on facebook to see what is out there?

Looks like standard rust - will need 2 new wings, and arches - possibly may need a new rear arches if they are bad - thing to bare in mind as they are double skinned need to ensure all rust is tackled with.

Id be also inclined to look at the sills on that (hidden under the plastics) and underneath the car.

Any photos of the engine bay?

If you can get it for that price it would be a safe risk to take - but obviously factor in any work that may need to be done mechanically etc... but you wont know until its been through an MOT!

I suppose thats the risk. It could be just 2 new wings, or if not new wings then fresh metal and fresh metal on the arches..but like you said you never know. Iv bid up to 600. And ive allowed myself upto a £1000 to sort the rust as im pretty close to a good fabricator whos done work on my scoob before. Can you buy rear arches?

Like i said i cant view the car first. I can ask for pics of the bay and the sills? If not the sills then underneath. Im sure thers been worse youve seen but its not pretty, thats why its at that price, but its lowish milage with 12 or 14 stamps (cant remember what he said) and thers no noises or leaks..but thats his word, i could be at a loss but if i make it right then at least i know it is right...if you know what i mean...how much would you pay?

Iv never owned jap performance cars so I cant really compare but iv had vr6's and I love them! if your after a vr6 then I would recommend taking a look at the mk4 golf v6 4motion, these have the newer 24v vr6 which has slightly more power and more torque lower down , the price's of these now can be very cheap considering they are top of the range mk4's with haldex AWD and 6spd Gearbox , I brought one last year and love it! ,  ebay number 291800757574

Hi dude, welcome to the family, so you want a VR6, I bought my 4-motion 2 years ago, it came with R32 suspension, body kit, dash unit, 19" wheels and along with the Highline interior she is a top motor, always gets people talking, I had a remap done about a year ago, what a difference it made, you get so much more midrange torque plus a little top end along with some Brembo vented/cross drilled discs with pads plus braided hoses, she's not the fastest motor I've ever owned having had Impreza's and twin turbo Legacy GTB's plus a tuned B5 S4 Avant but I can honestly say I've never had so much fun in a car, the Halsey works exactly when you want it she handles like she is on rails and I love her to bits, also the build quality over the rice burners is far superior, not that Subaru build bad cars as they are solid too, just a different class, if you buy one get a remap and change the suspension and you'll never be disappointed mate

I am on my 7th vr6. I have had a 4 motion in between but didn't find it half as good as the 12v. Just my opinion. I have gone from VR to 1.8t. Back to VR to Jag XKR back to VR to 330ci BMW and back to VR. This one I keep as a toy and I have had various other things alongside. MK5 Gti etc etc. However nothing makes me smile like driving my VR6. Don't expect it to handle like an early civic or be as quick as a scooby turbo and you will be fine lol
