Gone through two sets of Magnecor 8mm HT leads in less than 25,000 miles

 

First set started giving me problems at about 15,000 miles so got another set that again started giving me problems. So sent the first set off to Magnecor for warranty repair but had to pay them to fix them as the claimed they have been damaged in a way they see a lot so not covered by warranty. Was told they had been fixed, fully tested & were as good as new. Got them fitted today & the car is seriously miss-firing on what are supposed to be 'as good as new leads'. Not happy at all especially as I have a Schrick Manifold so have paid to get the leads replaced & took time off work to get the car to my mechanic.

 

Need the car for this weekend so considering putting the second set back on in the meantime as the they only had a slight misfire.

 

Any recommendations on other makes of leads as I am not happy with the Magnecors at all or their customer service?

That's a bit of a bummer and quite the opposite from when I dealt with magnecor about 8 years ago. What damage did they say it was?

Only thing that springs to mind is if plug removal tool wasn't used and has caused damage on the plug.

The leads in running were off my old mk3 I smashed on the Nurburgring in 2005, they got beat up and sent them off to magnecor 8 years ago and still using them today on my supercharged Corrado.

Are you sure the spark plugs / coil pack is ok? I know from experience having a schrick fitted doesn't make for an easy job replacing plugs and leads and feel your frustration.

The plug part on magnecor leads I found to be a bit fussy, probably due to age and have been removed quite a few times over the year so have them a good clean and tweaked the plug part so they fitted tighter on the spark plug.

To determine if it's a lead issue or something else you'll need swap some leads around and see if misfire improves but it's unusual to get problems with the leads as they are good quality.

Can't really comment on Magnecor leads as i've never used them. I just run standard factory leads an they're fine. Not sure whether you have or not as you've not said, but check you plugs as they may need replacing....? Not trying to tell my Grandma to suck eggs as the saying goes? But worth a look see.. :ph34r:

Thanks both. Plugs were changed about 2 months ago.

They said the damage was on the plug as tool was not used - my mechanic does use the tool though!

Defo think the issue is with the leads as car is now running much worse than it was & the leads are the only thing that have been changed. The set that was on there gave a slight hesitancy the refurbed set miss-fire all over the place making the car almost undriveable. Maybe I have been unlucky but did not expect to get so little time out of 2 sets of what are supposed to be quality leads. Will try & get the leads swapped back over today so at least I can drive my car over the weekend as I have a few places to go.

 

Will call Magnecor this morning & see what they say. Defo not buying another set of magnecor leads though

Have they been fully seated on to the plug correctly? As in pushed on all the way?
It's a bastard job to get right frankly and if they're not on this'll cause issues.

The correct tool should be used for both removal and fitting

Magnecor have been trying to help & are going to talk to my mechanic. He is a a VW specialist & has been doing conversions etc for years so I trust his opinion. Looks like if i want it sorted this side of Christmas I am going to have to get another set of leads to add to the two sets of magnecors that I have. Having the Schrick manifold is the extra headache in changing the leads.

 

Any other recomendations on leads as if they sort the issue I may as well keep them on for the time being due to the Schrick manifold?

For what its worth mine are just standard leads from my local motor factors and have been on the car for around 2 and a half years now with no problems/trouble at all if truth beknown.. Don't know if that helps any? Prob not, but just thought I'd mention it. :ph34r:

Magnecore leads are crap, I spent 6 months searching for a misfire at  boost on my vrt it was only when the guy who does my mapping said change them as he has had quite a few cars in with problems due the leads so I changed my 6 month old magnecore leads for genuine and it cured it! 

I would never ever buy them or recommend them and just use genuine ones now.

Thanks all for your help so far cannot wait for Magnecor to get back to me again. Going to get some Beru Leads (believe these are OEM) from here http://www.vwspares.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=646  unless anyone can recomend anything better? Think that GSF used to do the Bero Leads but showing as BBT on their site at the moment.
