matrix 0
what vr6 has the dohc i was told they only went in the mk4 onwards is this true.
dubloke 4
as the vr6 is twin cammed, being a narrow angle v6, the dohc stands for double overhead cam! it was stamped on some, but not all of the plastic manifold covers on the mk3's!
mightyvr6 0
The vr6 (12v) isn't strictly dohc as it only has one cam per bank of cylinders. I'm not sure the 24v vr6 has 2 sets of cams either as there is barely enough room, as the engine is a still a narrow angle v6. I think the 24v unit has 2 cams which have been designed with additional lobes to operate the extra valves.
mightyvr6 0
Early Mrk 4 US spec golfs had the 12v engine which was later replaced by 24v unit. All European Mrk 4s are 24v.
Eat this 2
its a single head with twin cams so it technically is dohc heheps im fairly sure the 24v also has 2 cams
antera309 3
The 24v has 2 cams - one runs all 12 inlet valves, the other runs all 12 exhaust valves. The 12v VR6 too has two cams, one running inlet and exhaust for cylinders 1,3 & 5, the other running inlet & exhaust for cylinders 2,4 & 6. FishWick 21
Indeed.....people forget the VR is a V6 because it has one head. It's a packaging masterpiece. 6 cylinders in a FWD hatchback would have been laughed at as a ridiculous and impossible idea in the 80s....until VW perfected Lancia's VR4 design in the late 80s. Sorry, VW did not invent the VR engine. And yep, the 24V is also twin cam with a clever rocker system.
