stockers 1
hi all, just as i was setting off to the gti festival all my coolant was dumped over my girlfrinds feet in the passenger footwell as i went round a corner.the coolant seems to have leaked out behind the dashboard but before the engine bay.i'm going through a reservour of coolant every 1/2 mile! is it likely that just a hose has come loose or perished in there? the car runs absolutely fine. any ideas? thx
clarkie 1
must be one of the heater piped split. where it goes through the bulk head
stockers 1
mmm... that was my thinking aswell clarkie, got a feelin that means removing steering wheel, center consol and dashboard! to get to it.
mightyvr6 0
Sounds like the heater matrix has blown up. Join the 2 pipes which go through the bulkhead to bypass the matrix.
stockers 1
if i bypass the matrix what wont work?
Nerih 0
heater matrix for sure m8, and if u bypass, youll have no heating (not that u need it today)
stockers 1
so all those 2 fat pipes that go through do is control the heater?
badboyV6 4
yeah- they provide your heat.... the fans blow the heat through. As mighty VR6 says join the pipes up and take it apart at the weekend- its summer so you aint got to worry about getting cold ;-)
stockers 1
will i need to drain the cooling system prior to joining the pipes? as i presume air in the pipes would be a bad thing? still learning
badboyV6 4
yeah- it would be a good idea unless you want the coolant to piss out all over you- its basically like a curcuit- ones feeding the fluid in - the other out. If you aint worried then just pull them off (when the engines cold obviously) Its not ideal to do this but if you need to get to work etc then itll get you by until your ready to take it apart and replace whatever is knackered
Petesvw 0
Shouldn't need to drain it fully. Disconnect the pipes someware before it goes tru the bulk head, and put some other pipe work in. then just top up,
stockers 1
cheers guys,is it a fairly safe bet that the heating matrex is knackered ? is there any way of testing it?
badboyV6 4
its awkward to say bud, but more than likely yes- its a very common fault on mk 2's and the same is starting to happen to mk 3's. best to take it apart and see first before you go and buy one though.... Nerih 0
and make sure you use a proper coolant mixture too, it helps stop things corroding.
pete8tch 0
mines exactly the same , have joined the pipes together couple of weeks agoyou just dont get heat thats all the golf is an air blend system so has no valve its just a circuit of water , i just used a scrap heater pipe to join em together. bad news is its a big job to replace the matrix dash out and everything. antera309 3
Taking the dash off isn't actually that difficult. Have done it twice on my car now. Let me know if you need any advice on this.
