Hello to one and all

I've have recently purchased a VR6 and the car has been running fine. However recently it has been running lumpy at low revs as if a blockage of sorts, yet clears higher up and runs smooth. Also the header tank is showing the water to be a nasty brown colour and the water is extremely hot to touch. Any ideas would be appreciated.

dont think too expensive at this stage, it could be something as silly as ht leads or plugs, take it to a decent garage or someone you know who will have a look for you, as you say it clears at higher revs it could be an ht lead breaking down at lower revs? the water will be hot!!!!! the brown colour could just be shitty coolant that needs changing? has it got oil residue in it? if it has? you need it gas analysed to see if you have a crack somewhere or leaking head gasket, dont panic though it may be something silly.

if it looks like oil it probably is! you do get a brown murky residue in a header if its coolant has not been serviced regularly or if its and older motor, only way to be 100% is to get it checked out mate, it may be that it just hasnt been serviced recently and coolant is murky, it should be a nice pink colour, is there any other signs of neglect in the engine bay? is it a high miler? depending on what year your vr is and its spec compared to what you paid for it depends on wether you feel you have been ripped mate.

the coolant is generally hot, so dont stic your fingers in there. Drain it and put some clean coolant in and run it, see if it gunks up again, if it does then its head rust....vw can sort this for u i think but itll cost a bit.
