VR6 golfy engine timing chain probs? clunk

Recommended Posts

Hi there all, i am in desperate need of advice!!, i just bought a 3dr vr6 97 flavour, done 116k, and i have spent a fortune on it, as it was a biffa, i had all the paint done, new alternator, powdercoated bbs wheels, and new rubber motd and all lovley, then !omg, i get a bucking sparking prob! which i eventually sorted out, anyways, i came up to a set of traffic lites, and the car stopped! dead! it went quietly !ill , with no apparent suffering, but i tried to start it, and the thing sounds clunky and faster than normal, justs turns over, not firing ~:( . !dodge .

Anyways, i have had the top off and seen that the timing chains are all whole and upon turnover everything seems to be going round fine, justs sounds a little clattery, looked down the ports and there seems to be a little bit where maybe a valve has touched? i dunno? %-6 , anyways, anyone had similar experiences?, whats the best route? B)B):(

oh feck! i think you probably have it there' date=' is it a new lump job or can i get away with new chain and stuff? anyone know how much a cma chain is? would a raleigh grifter chain work lol !lol !amazed

[/quote']

depends on how far they have slipped!! expect some damage to valves though! i would think its a head off job to check and new chains and guides etc, i think gsf do chains a bit cheaper than vw but some parts will probably be main dealer only, !sad for you, but it will live again!

Ok heres more!, it stopped so quietly, at tickover, i have looked in the ports looks like no damage, done a compression test and there is not anything on any of them, doesnt even register!? any ideas, or is this the norm, i would have thought that there would have been a clunk, but it seemed like it just cut out! grrr !dodge :@

m8, this is a big problem you got with ur engine, you'll need it fixed properly :)...good luck, i dont think its probably cheaper to buy a s/h engine though, its easier to re-chain/tension it replace valves and check the engine over, rather than buying a s/h high mileage vr engine which may die the same way....just food for thought.
