NEED SUM BIG POWER INCREASE....NEED SUM HELP....

Recommended Posts

Righty-hoo, my automatic gearbox is dyin slowly. Ive been quoted about £900 for a re-conditioned one. My response to the friendly technician was....(use your imagination!). Designer dubs can do a manual 5 speed manual conversion for £1500 with limited slip diff, so that where im going. After the conversion, i proabably want to get a really good chip and air induction kit installed. After that, i want to have some big power increases for the odd occasion, but having trouble deciding whether to go for NOS or not. To be quiet honest, im not spending money or s/charging or turbo charging simply bcause i know im never going to get the chance of using the power fully all the time. Any ideas??? Any help appreciated.

well, this manual box you're gettin put in, has it got standard ratios? cause the vr6 is held back by poor ratio's, if you get different gears and final drive put in, then it'll feel like you've gained bhp. phatvr6 is the expert, i'm sure he'll comment on this soon. but the diff will make it much quicker...tho don't even think about lifting off mid-corner, or you'll regret it as you go off the road backwards (lsd's need the throttle on for them to work)

i dont understand the ger ratio situation. if i got a 6 spd box in, it would mean my top end speed would be higher, but wouldnt it mean idhave to change gear more thus losing time in 0-60? or am i totally wrong. if i wanted to alter gearing to get a good low speed pickup, say 0 up to 100, what would my best option be?

usulayy when they fit a six speed conversion, they keep use the original 5th gear ratio but use it as 6th. they then close up all the lower gears, thus making the car accelarate faster.

you can also specify your own setup i think, so you could have a shorter 6th, and gain a bit more in accelaration (but at the costs of top end).

Or you could have a slightly longer 6th like I've got - 4k rpm = 115mph. 3/4/5 ratios are better spaced. Best way I can describe it is that my 3rd is in between the 2nd and 3rd on a standard 5 speed box, 4th is like 3rd plus a bit etc etc. The midrange pick up is much better - makes you feel like you've gained 50bhp!

hi simey, hows your vr bro. i might of exagerated by saying dying. The only problem is, the car over revs too much in gear D. The revs do not move in proportion to the speed of the engine. For example.... i could be doing 70mph in D and when the auto box changes the gear, the revs build up for a couple of seconds and then switch gears. This causes wheelspins at high speeds. Gears 1,2 are all ok. Gear 3 slips a bit, and gear D slips all the time. I know this sounds really bad, but its soo funny to see peoplles reactions when they hear your car wheel spin down the motorway at 85mph. To be quiet honest.......this is the only problem im experiencing with the autobox. Once i get the manual conversion in, we'll sort out a good price.

i tried my local auto transmission specialist in acton, middlesex. He said, if your gears have been slipping for more than a few weeks, then i'll need a re-conditioned box. i asked him about renewing the ATF and ATF filter. he said it wont be worth it. By the way, that was £900 + vat + labour.

There is quite a good place (at least I think its still there) on the North Circular road in Palmers Green. Think its called Stephens Engineering or something very close to that. Might be worth having a second opinion before lashing out loads of money?

i mean you pay £1000 for a manual conversion, an extra £500 if you want Limited Slip Differiential. Brings it to a total £1500 approx. That is quiet reasonable bearing in mind these dudes (designer dubs) are pro's at what they do.
