BMC/cold air kits, etc - are they really worth it?

Recommended Posts

I currently run a standard airbox with K&N panel filter however I was looking into placing a filter in the wing type deal.

However I am debating if it is really worth spending money on. Does anybody have a before and after RR report to prove they work?

TBH I dont think the cost per bhp/torque increase is justified for these kits.

There have been 7bhp gains seen with a BMC (on a VR6) which is leagues ahead of most induction kits. The reasons for this are many, but with the BMC its the heat shielded airbox, filter design and the airflow through the airbox that makes the difference. RAMair filters will always suffer because they are sucking in hot under-bonnet air. There's much more going on in a BMC. They are very expensive though I'll give you that. I have one and its massively better than the RAMair I had before.

just a note but i purchased a kit from the US a few weeks back- its a polished aluminium mandrel bend tube that drops down to a K&N where the carbon cannister sits. Does a lot better job than the K&N 57i kit and sounds better. Cost me 60 quid all in.

One bad point though is the paranoia of driving through a huge puddle or something in the winter.. Looks lovely too..

it wasnt turn 2- they do them too though (didnt know they went iout of business though- that'll explain a few things!) .... its basically the same as a CAI kits from carbonio but obviously polished aluminium - and they use a proper K&N....

personally recommended for the price and look :-)

  • 3 weeks later...

I went from a standard set-up to a K&N 57i, which was an improvement, I then got a ABD bigbore intake, which also improved the top end of the rev range. However it was far too loud and I ended up scaring other drivers. So I bought a BMC CIA, which was a pain to fit, but was much quieter and seamed to level out the rev range. I've since replaced the ABD intake with the standard pipe to maximise the MPG which is currently 26.4 on a tank. All 10 mile trips. I really would like to take all my parts to a rolling road to see what set-up works best under particular types of driving.
