Should I be worried!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Recommended Posts

I have checked out several threads relating to oil temp, I changs my oil every 5K with semi-synthetic and recently noticed that while driving at a steady 80mph the oil temp can touch 114 degrees no problems, if I thrashed it i am sure it could get to 120.

I have been told this is an acceptable temp as the warmer the oil the better the lubrication and thus quality of oil.????

What do you think.

To add to this for the past 18 months the water temp has not moved above 90 which is central, it has now started to raise on runs to about 100.

IS MY VR TRYING TO TELL ME SOMETHING???? :(

cruising at 80mph would give me an average Oil temperature of 84 degrees and water temp of around 75-80.

I'd say you were running a little warm. Wouldn't worry too much, but to be safe check your coolant, oil and check that all your temperature sensors are working correctly.

Always better to be safe than sorry. I've learnt the hard way..

I only ever had an oil temperature of over 120 once and that was after a blast from Bognor Regis at 3 in the morning at an average speed of around 120mph all the way. (emergency)

But I'm no expert.

G12+ from the dealer is the stuff to use. A 70/30 G12+ to water blend is fine for the UK. Too much G12 reduces the water's ability to absorb heat.

Agreed with the other guys, 114 at a steady 80 is too high. A new stat and fresh coolant should reduce it to more acceptable levels.

yes there's a drain plug. Look below the inlet manifold on the front of the engine block and you should see a long black plastic coolant pipe. It has a drain plug about half-way down which is accessible from underneath. Unscrew it using a coin or screwdriver. Undo the bottom rad hose too.

  • 1 month later...

I had my new stat and coolant fitted today, also oil and filter change with Synta sliver.

On the 40 mile run home at the steady 80mph and the water temp did'nt budge above 90 and the oil topped out at 102 and dropped, off the m-way to 90, looks like I've cured the overheating probs :):):)
