matth76 1
HiI've just got a totally standard (no mods) Golf VR6. I want to keep the car subtle without going over the top but I would like more power if possible. My main plan is to add a cat back stainless system exhaust (one that is subtle and not too loud in normal revs - but has a nice roar when you floor it). Possibly thinking about a Magnex or Milltec exhaust. But what are the main differences? My other plan was to have some kind of performance air-filter. However I've heard heat soak is a major issue with the v6 engine so the air filter would have to have it's own housing that sheilds it from the heat. I've heard BMC is good...is this the case, and how much would it be for a garage to supply and fit?I assume with both the exhaust and air filter I'd be looking at 5-10bhp if I'm lucky. Is the standard ECU able to be remapped? Is a remap needed to get to 200bhp or are other modifications necessary? How much would I be looking at a remap? Will my car be less reliable or is the VR6 engine capable of handling the increase in power?By the way, my Golf VR6 is a 1997 P-reg. How many valves does it have? And do the VR6 engines differ in any way depending on how old it is? Thanks for any help and info.CheersMatt
purple highline monster 0
12 valves!! loads of pipes to choose from i have a jetex full stainless cat back and its subtle, forget air filters put a charger on it!!!!
J5KE F 0
Cat back exhaust, BMC air filter, decent plugs & leads.then look for software.theres generally mild tuning bits in the group buy section, and plenty of 'up for it' VR owners to give loads of friendly and helpfull advise.readup on the forums and welcome! coullstar 2
Best thing to do is get it rolling roaded to see what its putting out at the moment.
beetle.jim 0
All i did to mine is fit an induction kit and 6 brance manifold and it made 199.9 bhp/ 189lb ft torque. Think some engines losen up a bit with age.
Ciaran 4
by the sounds of it a phase 2 engine with an induction kit and exhaust should make 200. lets hope with a 6-2-1 ported manifold and a high flow cat that i make a bit more than that all i have to do is fit them now!! lol

Think some engines losen up a bit with age.How much did it cost for a garage to supply and fit your six branch manifold? Is it similar to a "Shrick" manifold? I'm not sure what a shrick manifold is but there's a lot of talk about it on here. What air filter did you go for?Did you need your ECU remapped as well to cope with the increase fuel/air ratio?I'm in West Sussex. Are there any good VW tuners who know what they are doing and could fit a 6 branch manifold etc? Has anyone heard of GCS Engineering? They serviced my car with my car's previous owner. Their website www.gcsengineering.com seems to suggest they do tuning...although has anyone actually used them...any good or bad stories? If there are any other local tuners please let me know.Does anyone know what the max bhp the standard Golf VR6 engine can cope with reliably (I've heard it is strong but how strong)? Also what is the standard performance specs...0-60mph and 0-100mph? What would the stats be with 200bhp? I assume it would be similar to the civic Type R which is front wheel drive and has 197bhp.Are there any German makes of exhaust? Thanks for any info and answers to my many questions!CheersMatt
beetle.jim 0
Sorry Matt i meant a 6 branch exhaust manifold. Pick them up for
J5KE F 0
Matt, general concensus seems to be these engines are good for 300 BHP mark. Regal in Southampton are pretty good however the guy who brought me up to an EST 320 Brake without the 75 n20 shot is based just off the 272 petersfield - winchester road. The1andonlygav 0
get it supercharged, cheap, stupidly powerful. good for 280 to 300 bhp and power all the way through the rev range. Get yourself an airfilter/induction kit (just for the sound) and exhaust system. mint
matth76 1
Thanks for your replies however I wouldn't say superchargers are cheap .... at
