Could be your oil pump worn and not moving the oil round quick enough so engine would knock until the pump gets working.

i was low on oil again i dont see where the oil is going it doesent smoke at all. im using castrol gtx at the mo but im going to get the proper stuff next.

I was reading another thread and they recon that the VR6 uses oil in normal running.

right grade but quantum synta is better though! all vw`s use a bit of oil during running sounds like a lot your using though? how many miles is it doing before it drops level?

about 1000 miles roughly like i said its not smoking.

could be that i boot it 80% of the time.

oh and now ive come home to find my battery is flat x)

Need to define the knocking a bit more really but a lot of VRs have piston slap first thing in the mornings, which is normal and sounds like a diesely rattle. Should only last 30 seconds to a minute maxium though.

If you can get hold of an oil pressure guage, look for 4 bar pressure at idle when cold and 8-9 bar at 3000 rpm. Hot idle pressure should be 2 bar and 4 bar on the move. If those readings are achieved, then the pump is fine.

It's handy having the OE Corrado volt and pressure guages in my centre console ;-)

As for the oil, I recommend Silkolene Pro S 10W/50 full synthetic. It's an ester based oil and it's brilliant stuff.

Synta Silver is OK but it's Castrol in a different carton.

well it sounds like a loud slap or kncok noise but only lasts a few seconds but right now i cant even start it due to a flat battery.

any ideas about my flat battery i didnt leave any lights on alternator is charging at over 14v battery was tested at tyre an exhaust place and they say its ok so what could it be unless i left a side light on didnt notice when i got in the car though?

check the pipework for leaks from the crankcase breather to the air intake,common problem!usually either side of the US style blank warm up regulator.

not tapping hydraulic followers is it? They might tap until the oil pressure fully adjusts them. Or I might be talking utter tod.

does the noise come from the top or the bottom of the engine?

the loudness of it i would say bottom but im not sure as i havent heard it with the bonnet open im sure its nothing to worry about or it would be doing it all the time. just wondering if anyone else has the same thing
