VR-Six 0
I need some help from some people who actually know their stuff about VW's - unlike the mechanics i have been seeing lately!! I had some Black Diamond brakes and predator pads fitted to my VR ('92 -280mm setup) last year and all has been going well until about a month ago when a strange grinding/clunking noise started coming from the front drivers side wheel/brake when i slowed down at junctions. This noise is also happening when taking right hand turns or bends and i can actually feel it through the brake pedal. The noise is pretty loud when coming to a junction and it seems to happen with each rotation of the wheel.I have taken the car and explained the problem to 4 different garages now and not one of them can explain to me what is wrong!! I don't know if its a warped brake disk, C.V joints or driveshaft but i do know i need to get it sorted soon!! I thought i'd post this up before buying some new brake disks and pads just in case these are not the problem....Please can anyone help me out with some information before i go insane!!Thanks guys
Justicevr6 0
One way to check if it is the disc is to check the runout, if you do not have the correct tool you can improvise using 2 straight edges like steel rulers and a pair of mole grips, hold 1 upto the strut then the other at 90o and clamp with the mole grips turn the disc and you should be able to see if the disc is warped.having said that a warpt disc normaly meens that when you brake the peddle will pump up and down in time with the warp.HHave you tried taking it out of gear when coasting to see if it still happens. coullstar 2
Wheel bearing?
Nerih 0
could be your pads are worn out and your on to the backing plate?could be your wheel nuts are loose (craggsy will atest to how my wheels used to clank and crack before i had the short bolts fitted)discs could be warped? i dunno about this one, usuallywarped discs, youll feel MAJOR pedal vibration, not generally clunking sounds.wheel bearings? yep could be these (but try the other checks for simpel tihngs like wheel bolts and brake pads first m8)
Ultimatetune 0
i would be looking at wheel bearing or cv joint, as it clunks when braking and when turning right i would have said cv joint, wheel bearing will rumble usually unless completely worn out, check the cv gaitors to see if there is any splits and if thre is there wont be much grease left inside, can you feel it through the steering wheel when tunring right? is it a metallic clunking load clicking noise? VR-Six 0
Thanks for all your advice guys! Ultimate Tune - I can feel it through the steering wheel when turning right and it definitely is a metallic clunking noise. I'll have the CV joint and wheel bearing checked to see if this is the problem. Id hav been really pissed if i ordered some new brake disks and pads to find that they weren't the problem in the first place!!! My cars goin in to the bodyshop for a serious restoration/makeover and i just want the thing running as sweet as the engine is before it goes!!Again thanks for everyones help!! Ultimatetune 0
VR-Six, it really does sound like its a cv joint, doubt its that brakes unless some how the hub nut has come undone and is allowing movement of the disc.
