Is there a way to open my car if my key fob battery runs out??

Recommended Posts

Hi

I recently tried to open my car with just the key and the lock knob would go up for half a second and then go straight back down again. I always use my remote key fob to lock and open my car. However when I remotely lock it and try to then open it with just my key (which fits) it does the above...briefly opens it and locks straight away. The only way I have found to get in my car with my key is through the boot but this sets of my alarm straight away and I'm sure even if I did wreck my boot trying to crawl through into the driver (with the alarm blaring) seat I wouldn't be able to start the car as the immobilizer would be on and requires the key fob to turn it off. Is there a special way to open the car with just the key? Bare in mind I will never lock the car with just the key...so it needs to be opened with just the key after the car has been remotely locked. I can only assume I will need to start carrying around a spare battery and small screwdriver. The problem is I assume the key fob could run out of power straight away without warning. When it is new the remote locking doesn't have a huge range at all...about 6 feet at most...so I wouldn't be able to tell when the battery was running out. &|

You can generally tell when the remote battery is going flat, as it will tend to take a longer press or repeated presses to operate.

The issue you have is that the car is deadlocked, but you should always be able to open it from the driver's door with the key.

Is it a mk3?

Yes mark 3 1997 golf vr6. When the car has been remotely locked and I try to open it with the key the key fits the lock no problem but the door lock knob on the inside of the window goes up and then goes straight down. Seems like some auto locking mechanism.

I do have to press my key fob for a second before it opens... although its always been like this... where's a good source to get new batteries?
