julesm 0
I've just brought a Mk3 Golf Convertible with a 2.9 VR6 engine in. It runs brilliantly but I have noticed that when the engine warms up a little it occasionally stalls when braking to stand still. I've had it plugged in and the only fault found was a faulty crank shaft sensor which was replaced, and the idle valve cleaned. The problem is however still there and looking about the web at some technical sites there seems to be a bit of a blip on these engines when it comes to this problem. Can anyone shed some light on this for me and hopefully tell me how to go about solving it. Some of the solutions I have found are Vacuum Leak / bad ground under a sheet metal screw by the big electrical harness plug at the radiator / check the pre-screen / replace the coil pack Any help or advice would be most appreciatedjules
mightyvr6 0
does the car have electronic speedo?
kilokilla 0
sounds like air leak when you brake your servo drains air from engine, if you have air leak it means the engine not getting eneough air so it stalls .also known brake servos to cause this prob when on there way out as they start sucking to much air again then ,hope this helps a bit
FishWick 21
2.9 is known for that. Speak to any Corrado driver!I bet they scanned the engine when the ignition was off? Crank sensor always comes up when the engine is off. If the crank sensor was dead, the engine wouldn't even start, let alone stall at junctions. Sounds like they're charged you £140 for nothing.Only do the coilpack if you've got a misfire. This is a very tricky one to cure. You might have to get it chipped to 'fuel' out any issues that low in the rpm range. Failing that, you'll have to crank up the idle speed which the ECU and TPS won't like very much.K
theotherphil 0
Mine does exactly the same thing on my 2.8VR. As kevhaywire mentioned, jacking up the idle speed (via the throttle stop) causes a load of problems which the ECU really doesn't like. I've cleaned the idle speed stabiliser valve, throttle body and checked for obvious air leaks but am no further forward. Local garages have been no help and the dealer has no suggestions that work. It's annoyed me that much that I am getting rid of the car tomorrow....just bought an Impreza to make me feel better [ Edited Thu Apr 22 2004, 12:15PM ]

FishWick 21
They're a bit fragile in places but awesome fun.
acf8181 0
mine don't idle any more either!
wilko-vr6 0
do imrezza's idle well?!?!?!?!they alway's sound like a sack off **** when i hear one go up the road!LOL!mind you.whatever floats your boat!still a poor man's cossie!!!!
FishWick 21
Yeah they do idle well. My friend has got a 2000 WRX and a mate at work has got a P1. Both are wicked fun but I wouldn't own one. I wouldn't really say an Impreza is a poor man's Cossie, it's Sierra at the end of the day and they were ghastly cars. But I can appreciate the RS500 from a purists point of view.Escort Cosworth was a bit better, so long as it was the tamer lux and not the one with the ridiculous tail wing - which it didn't even need anyway.Anyway...moving way off topic here, LOL! eViL 0
Put a switch on the Idle Stabilisation Valve, so it's on when the car is cold and off when it's warm.Mine just started doing this recently and disconnecting the idle valve solves this.
julesm 0
After speaking to an ex Dubsport mechanic he has told me that it is 70% certain to be a faulty Air Flow Meter. Apparently it is a common fault on these engines and can be very difficult to find, as other people are finding ! I'm gonna try and clean the Throttle Body & Valve, Idle Valve and check for any vacuum leaks. If that fails chances are it looks like it will be the Air Flow Meter so I'll try one off another VR6 engine that does not stall before shelling out £160 for a new one. &| jules
madmonkee 0
£160 from where??
VRmonster 1
i think u can get em from the dealer £75 exchange now, as maf faults are becoming more common.
Geastb 0
Where is the ISV located?
julesm 0
Rang VW and they don't do an exchange on the air flow meter - in fact a new one is over £300 !!!!!!
zerocool 0
stealth racing sell em and they are cheaper than that, normally a duff maf sensor will give you lack of power when accelerating, but I woudn't be suprised if it caused it to stall too
VRmonster 1
i cannot find where i read about vw doing the maf sensors. ill post a link if i get it.
eViL 0
It was in this month's PVW technical advice section. It was some guy from Awsome GTi who said that VAG do a £75 SERVICE exchange on a MAF.Lets all get on the blower and give them some grief..
