How good is a C2 supercharger - is it as reliable as a Vortech?

Recommended Posts

Hi

I've heard of a few superchargers, mainly the (Z engineering) ZR1 and ZR2 and Vortech superchargers. However I've just heard there is another one, the C2. Is this as good as a Vortech and as reliable? Does it have steel rotors or are they ceramic and does it feed of oil from the car engine? Does it produce similar power output and what sort of prices would I be looking at buying one brand new...cheapest possible price ideally?

Many thanks for your help.

I think VF engineering , or maybe Vortech themselves bought out Z eng'? So all the kits are now are Vortech based and ZE did all the intial bracket work to make them fit VRs. C2 give you more in their kits than VFE and run 10 psi instead of 8, which is what you get with a VF stage 2.

The Z1 was dry ceramic and serp' driven, Z2 oil fed and toothed belt. Z1s were problematic, Z2s much better.

The Vortechs and Z2s take oil off the filter housing with a splitter. Oil is then fed back into the sump as per a turbo. Turbine blades are steel.

Prices, NSRacing do a V9-SQ based kit for

If your planning on buying secondhand, you can't go wrong with a zr2, many people here have them and say that are very good. I have a v1 vortech charger with a c2 kit, its also very good. The vf is a bigger kit manufacturer than c2, c2 is coming along nicely though with competative priceses.

reliablility :- i would have THOUGHT* (correct me if im wrong) that a dry charger with ceramic bearings would need more maintenance than a vortech one, the zr2 has its own oil reservoir, which probably needs changing (as perdoidically as you change your oil for your engine), i would have thought this amount of oil would cause problems, but it doesnt, they run fine. The v2.v1.v9 vortech chargers all have their own engine oil supply lines, so you automatically change their oil when you change engine oil. im not sure if the zr runs cooler becuase it doesnt use the engine oil (which can get a bit warm!), or if the zr2 gets hot becuase it doenst have a large amount of oil to use.

both are good, from what ive learnt (i think you should ask some of the zr2 owners what they think, as far as the vortechs go, they are good).

I've had both a ZR2 and a Vortech V1. One thing you notice is the Zr2 is a lot easier to spin so it spins up quickly and doesn't suffer from belt slippage. I think they recommend you change the oil every 15k miles in a zr2 and you have to remove the charger to do it. The Zr2 definitely ran cooler than the Vortech -you can barely touch the vortech when it's warmed up without burning yourself! Overall a good reliable unit. Things to watch out for on the Zr2 would be wear (dishing) of the toothed drive pulleys and oil leaks.

from the title of your thread, C2 DO NOT make superchargers, they put the kit together, VF DO NOT make superchargers they put kits together.

both kit manufacturers use the same VORTECH chargers (both kit manufacturers use the same charger manufacturer)...

so you see, a c2 supercharger and vf supercharger are the same...whats different is the other bits they give, like mounts, piping, eeproms and so on.
