Probably worth doing if you do a clutch but not worth dropping the box just for that. My local machinists will reface, lighten and balance a VR flywheel for £57. It's a good idea to get the refacing done as a minimum to ensure a judder free replacement clutch.

Advantages of weight reduction are increased engine responsiveness and better enginer braking. Disadvantages are the engine slows down much quicker, so pulling away and gearchanges will feel different.

basically, they let the engine rev more freely....although you can actually loose power uphills. also, idle will be lumpy, so best to get the whole bottom end balanced.

i had the flywheel done by a local engineer shop who also refaced where the clutch sits.

the pulleys i bought from the u.s. and are made by unorthodox racing. you get a alternator pulley, larger power steering pulley as the crankshaft one is smaller making it underdriven.

all together they made a difference as it revs up much quicker.
