URGENT HELP - worst nightmare come true

Recommended Posts

Had a miss fire about a month ago, VW checked it out and it turned out to be No. 5 HT lead.

This morning on the way to work, loss of power BIG TIME on the motorway. Sounds like the same problem has happened again.

Is it common for HT leads to keep failing?

And how much for a new set? Might as well do the lot now....

just had the car recovered back home, the driver (who seems a bit of a w@nker) ONLY listened to the engine while it was running and told me I had a terminal problem. Claimind that the oil pump was shot and that the bottom end had big problems, crankshaft and bearings are worn.

Please someone tell me you can't tell all that just from listening to the engine..........

ERRRR.. You don't wanna know.... Yes you can, You can be even more technical and ues a stethescope, most just use a screw driver to the ear bit.. no I'm not kidding... the noise/ vibration travels up the screwdriver and allows you to "hear" the problem.. as to what sound to listen for .. well dunno really Big ends usually knock .. so it should be audible without a screwdriver.. then again the bearings should moan if theres a problem...

damn :@ , sh1t !ill , f#ck %-6 , bollox :( , what a blunt ~:( .

Just as I had big plan for mods, this goes and happens.

In need of a decent 'won't rip me off' mechanic to give me an honest opinion on the problem (there must be one out there).

Can anyone on here recommend a mechanic in the south west london area? I'm in kingston, willing to travel (not too far tho).

Ouch, what a pisser. Really sorry to be reading this, mate.

I can wholeheartedly recommend the guy I get to do to do all the jobs I cannot tackle myself. He's been in the business for years and has worked on a wide selection of cars. He operates around my area (Hayes, Southall, Greenfor, etc).

If that's not too far away, let me know. I'll call him and give him an outline of the problem as per your description and we'll go from there.

Oh fcuk, oh fcuk,oh fcuk.

Just drove my baby about 4 miles to get to a mate's garage, and........

Pulled up, had a quick look and listen over the engine, still making an awful noise from the left hand side of the engine, topped up the oil, went to start her again, then....

Engine bloody seized, plus terible electric burnig smell from the starter motor. :( :@ !ill ~:(

Sounds like I'm looking at a rebuild or transplant. Mechanic's gonna look at it proper 2moro. I'm expecting the worst.

I'm so fcuking upset right now...

For the main bearings & big ends to get torn up and the engine to subsequently sieze, I'd say it was running with inadequate oil pressure, possibly due to an oil pump failure, or a drastically low oil level due to a leak. Oil pump failures are very rare on VR6s, but any moving part can fail at the end of the day.

I'm surprised the dashboard oil light never made an appearance prior to the engine failing.

Your best option is to get hold of a second hand VR6 engine (there are several VRs breaking at the moment), fit new timing chains and a new clutch to it and get it bolted in.

There are several VW specialist workshops I could recommend for doing the engine swapout. Once in the workshop, the job could take anythig between 2 days and 2 weeks depending on how busy they are.

Just one question for the others... Aswad's car is most likely an OBD1. Would an engine from an OBD2 car be OK to use as long as it's just the bottom end & cylinder head that are swapped over?

I am so' date=' so, sorry for you mate. Never had a car I really cared about until the VR6.

But it does remind me of the importance of fixing the virgin chains on my 153Ker!

chains are on the right hand side of the engine ;)

Got it checked over, started again this morning, but bottom ends fcuked, due to low/no oil. No obvious leaks, only checked level the other week, maybe should of checked it more regularly. No oil warning light, and for it to happen all of a sudden has confused me and the mechanic.

Mine's a late N 95 OBD2 116000 miles, so looking for an engine to swap out ASAP.

Anyone got a spare one going? Low mileage preffered, but anything considered. Only really looking for a bottom end. Planned on doing some head work anyway. Can I straight swap a 2.9 rado bottom end?

antera309> I think you are right there, heads and bottom ends are interchangable.

Also, try these, they are a huge VW breakers and quite often get hold of VR engines:

Check the VR6OC "Address Book" (from the menu at the top of this page) for more breakers.

Also worth giving Simon/Paul from Strictly Dubs a call. They can supply and fit second hand engines and know what they're doing (they did the VR conversion on my cabrio):

And BTW, yes, a Corrado 2.9 bottom end will be a straight swap, if you can find one in good condition. You will get even more power if you fit the inlet manifold and throttle body from the 2.9 as well.

Ha ha ha whooo ahha ah. Sorry. Just the thought of decent honest machanics made me laugh. I'm sure there are plenty of honest mechanics and decent ones but those with both qualities seem the stuff of legends.

Sorry to hear your car is poorly but I wouldn't be too quick to reach for the cheque book - the bloke you spoke to may be trying to rustle up some business. You do the right thing in seeking another opinion.

I would hope there would have been more symptoms of the bottom end etc before the breakdown.

Good luck mate.
