Macca 1
Where exactly is the ticking coming from?My engine makes a slight 'ticking' and ive heard others doing it too, dont know if its a problem or not though. My engine also went through a stage of whistling pretty loudly, although this has now stopped. There was also a very loud clunking after i bought the car, and i took it to a garage but they found nothing wrong. The clunking also faded away after time.I doubt there's anything wrong with yours, but i'll see what the others say
beng 0
sound comes from the pulley end of the car?
jamieVR6 0
Mine ticks aswell, but as far as i can tell it isn't a problem as it's been there since i bought it & it's been serviced twice in the time i've owned it.
beng 0
jamie i have only just got the car, its has only done 5000 miles since its last service, at VW dealers. i would have thought they would they have picked it up if anything was wrong, at least i hope!!! tommy 0
Don't worry beng.....I think you will find that?s quiet normal....mine does that but you only notice it with the bonnet up, not down....ive looked at many vr's before I bought mine all with low miles and full vag history and they all sounded the same! FishWick 21
The VR isn't the quietest of engines! Ticking will either be the one or more hydraulic tappets or the fuel injectors.

Pittuf 0
I had the RAC look at 2 cars, the first one said there was a lot of noise on start up and they seemed pretty concerned, but it went away when warm, and the owner was not concerned by it. This had done, aledgedly 30k.The second one I looked at (55k) I heard quite a loud noise on start up but the RAC didn't mention it. I've had no problems at all so far tho. The engine always sounds sweet.

Chris355 0
mine does the same RAC picked it up and said it may be a problem, brought the car any way and she is sweet, waste of a 100 quid in my opinion, been through a VW service and they found nothing.
patrick green 0
Mine sounds like a bag of spanners! In fact it's almost like a diesel so I'm thinking about a new head as it's probably the tappets because the sound is much the same from all over the engine.
beng 0
how much does a new head work out?
patrick green 0
Depends on what you want really - standard heads with valves I've seen for £200 although you would need other bits like new cam followers.gaskets etc - an up-rated head is around £800-£1000 but that does give some power increases. patrick green 0
wow! how did someone record my engine without me knowing about it!
shail 0
mine sounds a bit like the link. But the noise comes from the drivers side. Local VW specialist said my big end bearing was shot. New engine time. He said he's seen quite a few 80-90k engines with the same problem. I am well and truly gutted.
