Buying a VR6

Recommended Posts

Im thinking of swapping my VTS for a golf VR6' date=' k Reg with 100,000 miles and a newish engine going in. Generally the car is in good condition......just wondering what the problems with VR6's are..

Do you think it would be worthwhile me doing the swap..

Cheers

Hi mate

You won't go wrong with a VR6... no matter how many miles it's done...as long as it's got a FULL service history. How much are you paying for the K reg VR6? To be honest you're probably better off getting a car that doesn't need a new engine going in it and is in good condtion to start with... this can lead to potential things going wrong. However if it's done by a VR specialist you're probably ok. Although if the current owner is arranging the engine replacement it could be done on the cheap to get the car sold... it's a bit of a risk.

If I were you I'd sell your VTS privately (not sure how much you'd get for it - depends on age etc) and if necessary pay a bit extra to get a decent late reg VR6 ...they have more power...around 185bhp. The earlier editions had 174bhp...which still have storming power as standard. Either way you'll be happy with the VR...but as mentioned above the standard suspension (shocks and springs) needs upgrading...so look for a VR that has already had this done if possible to save you a bit of money.

I recently bought my VR6..it's vgc... full service hist, 1997 year 69k miles... for

I work in a VW dealership and not long ago purchased my Highline; and the guys in the workshop always told me to stay away from the early VRs. You get what you pay for at the end of the day so you can only go on your budget. But like Matth76 said, your better off going for a late VR and if you can a Highline.

My best mate has a K plater and bought his last year and it had 97K on the clock. He bought the car for 2K from a used car place just down the road and to date its cost him all together just over 4K in repair/maintenance bills. But thats not to say that you will have that its just an examlple.

Your VTS must be worth a bit. I'd sell privately and get a late VR. There are Highlines about now for 3.5K. Its worth it in the long run i think.

Good luck.

Personally i think your asking for problems.

I'm quite sure with the money you get from selling your VTS you'll find a nice VR.

How old is your VTS? Mileage etc? Just dont want you to swap your car and then the garage getting a better deal out of it. Cause i reckon a K plate VR aint worth as much as your VTS.

  • 2 weeks later...

I had a vts and it was great fun, nippy little motors off the lights and around town, I sold it because i had always wanted a vr.

I dont really miss the saxo at all, it rattled like a bitch and everytime i gave it a proper caning i was afraid it was going to break or not start the next morning! However do kinda miss its chuckability and handling.

If i was you mate I would put your saxo on the trader and see how much intrest you get, because if the chains have not been done on that K plate it will cost you in the long run.

Matt
