coullstar 2
I have been thinking of changing my Mk3 VR for an Mk3 8v gti but has anybody run both before? Just wondering if the 8v will be noticably cheaper to run in terms of petrol/insurace etc? Also what sort of mpg do you get from an 8v?

Petesvw 0
Would be tempted to get a 16v over an 8v mate. Used to get about 35-40 out of me old valver.
coullstar 2
I mainly do town driving though and the insurance is almost halved with the 8v. Quite fancy a colour concept plus it has to be 5dr for work.
tinny22 11
i had a 8v before the vr only
binliner 0
I used to have an 8v and yes its cheaper to run but not in the same league as the VR... the only consolation would be to get a high spec one like the colour concept but I wouldnt swapIf you want a cheaper to run car why not a mk4 tdi? coullstar 2
Cannot afford a newer car plus I have a bike for fun. Not a diesel man at all and I just get pissed off sitting in traffic jams with the VR. Tempted by a 16v though.Anyone interested in my VR just PM me.
mk3anni 0
I had an 8v an a Vr for about 3 months.8v is a better town car, nicer gear change and more nimble, and better on fuel. Given the choice i'd have both!!
coullstar 2
90% of my driving is now either town or motorway so I just dont need the VR. I do like the power and the car is great but I must be getting old as head is now ruling heart.
Nerih 0
see if you can get a mk3 auto if you dont like traffic, you can get one dead cheap.
six appeal 53
Hello mate, I run a Mk2 8v GTI as well as the VR and to be honest I really don't find much difference in running costs (ie Petrol etc...) Can't see that the Mk3 8v would be much different. Think you'll just find it sluggish in the Mk3.Simon.
coullstar 2
see if you can get a mk3 auto if you dont like traffic' date=' you can get one dead cheap.[/quote']I would need my left leg chopped of before getting an auto!! The probelm is just whats the point in having a 2.8l engine sitting there doing jack in a traffic jam its a complete waste and I actually feel the car is suffering from it. Healthy engine in it so wouldnt want to be the one that shafted it.
francisjonno 2
My brother used to have a mk3 8v - good solid cars, used to get about 35mpg, not really very quick though. My mum has a mk3 16v which is much nicer to drive than an 8v, still gets about 32-35mpg (37 on motorways) its a nice car and has more direct steering than my VR. Its good to take for a blast every now and thenI'd have a 16v over an 8v any day, I think a heavy car like the mk3 needs the extra power.I think i'd need a colour concept or anniversary (no leather but recaros & 8 or 16v) for it to feel special enough if i had to replace my vr6
vdubgirl 3
I had a mkIII 8v before my Vr6 and i'll never buy one of them again however I'd have a mkII 8v.MkIII 8v was just too slow for me and the fuel consuption was not that great. However i did like it for the comfy factor over a mkII but hey thats why I have a vr6 highline its like a nice comfy sofa with a engine attached to it
Nerih 0
yeah get a mk2 8v for town, or 16v for the glorious high rpm sound lol. still you could go for an mk2 auto ...hehe.
