After replacing my heater matrix on my ODB1 Vr, it was all running fine and then started overheating. Anyway managed to fix that at the weekend (think it was just an air lock). I'm now getting a horrible tapping sound as if there is no oil, and the oil light comes on when going round corners! Even though I have been topping up and there is plenty on dipstick....Is this sounding like a head gasket has gone? :o

Any help will be appreciated.

hmm, i would check the oil filler cap for milky residue, if there is, then you know the head is leaking, look out the back exhaust when its warm, if its steaming/white fumes, its gone.

could be a seperate problem m8 ;(. but if its overheated, it might of knackered the headgasket, or the headgasket might of been leaking, hence the overheating lol :).

the oil light is to do with oil pressure, not oil level, so what that indicates, is that when you go round a corner, the oil presure drops, this is probably becuase the oil level is so low, that the oil moves to the side of the sump and you lose pressure. i would use your best judgement to 'guage' the accuracy of your dipstick, its simple tech, so it should give a decent measure of oil in your vehicle.

the real question is, does your coolant expansion tank stink of fumes? is the water discoloured? are you losing coolant?

120 degrees water and oil temperature, you've probably warped something inside m8, maybe your oil intake has fallen off and thats whats tapping!

seriously, get it checked out asap, those are SERIOUSLY high temperatures....

oil 120 i can understand, but water at 120 is very high...

when my gasket blew on my 4cylinder vw, it cost 400 to get it reskimmed and running like new, that included chemical bathing the head, of course a vr will cost a fair bit more, but i think you can get it done for 600, my garage here in london will do my head work and clutch for 800 which is very good, but then they've worked on our families car for yonks, i even met one of the mechanics at santapod when i was up there for the gti festival...

find yourself a decent mechanic find out whats wrong, if anything, hell it could be something simple ;).

if in doubt book it in at stealth, vince will let you watch, and you'll learn about your car at the same time, good prices excellent work.
