Jez, I was feeling this very same way just last week and although it's beginning to ware off (albeit slowly) I still feel a little crap about the whole matter.

Have a look down at the thread titled 'My SH*T Luck!' and you'll see why.

Can't think of anything too supportive to say right now except she still manages to make me smile on the drive in to work ;)

no matter what car you will have problems. a friend of mine recently bought a 16 valve corrado bout 4 weeks ago, thinking he got it for a bargain. so far he has had to have a wheel bearing done, a damaged wing, an engine mount broke, the fan packed up and it over heated and now its burst the expansion tank and the thermostat is stuck closed!!!! but he's sticking with the car, if he can im sure you can.

the opposites true for mr tbh. i am looking at getting a newer car because i want aircon really but i keep lookin at mine and thinking that all the stuff im thinking about isnt 4x better than my car for 4x the money.

crazy really as its 13 years old with 145000 on it but i really like it , i dont have to worry about depreciation the insurance is cheap , for me anyway and most of the stuff i can do on its been done.

was seriously considering a s/c but not really sure that a fwd car can handle that much power tbh , dunno what im gonna do yet so will just sulk about it for a while.

s/c is progressive, and if you've got a decent suspension setup, then it should be fine, since you arent making any noticable boost from idle until 2500+rpms, of course if its wet, in first its easy to spin the wheels throughout 1,2,3rd...250bhp should be fine...with stock stuff.

but im not sure about how it would go down with a high mileage engine, you need a well sealed gasket and decent piston rings to ensure you dont **** the engine...gearbox should be okay.

Aaah, just the stuff marriages are made from. It's usually an accumulation of the smaller things that leads to a divorce, not any one major thing. The majority of marraiges apparantly survive serious things such as affairs and violence but it's the small things like leaving the toilet seat up, nagging, clothes across the floor etc that build up and cause seperation.

I'll bet most of us would replace or repair a blown/damaged engine (which is quite an expense) rather than get rid of the car. But the smaller things that some of us experience on a regular basis get to be too much after a while...

Take mine for example, goes in to have timing chains, guides and tensioner replaced, comes out sounding like a V8. This happens 3 times before they get the timing right! Some twat whacks into the side of my car as I finally leave the garage, then it begins making noise from the gear box clutch area after a long run that evening and guess what, it's leaking oil from 'somewhere'. The following day I notice the AC is working 'intermitantly' and the air recirculation switch has started making a whining sound and stopped working the mechanism. Later that day the heater control illumination lamp fails. It's in now having the accident damage repaired and the oil leak sorted (rocker gasket) and the gearbox noise sorted (aparantly a loose bracket). I'm convinced that either I or the car are jinxed. lol at this rate if i keep replacing all the parts that fail, I'll have a new car by the end of the year ~:(

tbh, if your garage if half decent they'll maintain your car, and fix things during service...I've not had a major problem with mine yet, touch wood, but my service this month cost me 768 quid, so its not cheap, but at least you know everythings been checked by a quality garage who knows vw's.
