lowering a vr6, can you help please?

Recommended Posts

hi there ppl,

just a quick question, thinking of lowering my highline and putting new wheels on her, does anyone now as a rule or roundabouts the limits on how far you can lower, to how big or wide the wheels can be before having to roll or flare the arches? i know there can be a lot of variables like pdc and et etc, but i was thinking of lowering between 55 and 60mm on coilovers, and getting some 17" X 8 rims on the front and back, maybe not so wide on the front if not possible, or is it with camber? i dont know, please help if you can,

thanks

you can go low on coilovers but 60mm is a bit ambitious on 8j rims, i am running fk highsports and 8x17 RH alloys (et 60 with hub adapters) with 205 x 40 toyo tyres (they give a good stretch and sit nice on wider rim 215 rubber requires arch work!!), i dont have any arches rolled and unless i absolutely hammer it over rough bends clearance is good, i dont know how much drop i have? but its a long way compared to standard! best bet is to get a coilover set up of some sort and you can experiment,

cheers, yeah coilovers is the way to go as you can try different heights and if you go for a fk konigsport kit you get adjustable bump rebound (koni inserts) 8j rims are fine with 205 40 tyres the toyos i find sit better stretched and still perform aswell just have to be carefull of kerbs and big holes! as you get next to no rim protection!! it makes the car sit nice though, i got my fk highsports from venom motorsport for about

i had my first VR rolled and flared as the 7.5J RS4 rims were catching on the rear arches, the paint cracked so had to have full respray on rear quarters which cost 350 all in. the rolling/flaring only cost 50 quid for all four arches.finished article was perfect all done by an inurance approved body shop in walthamstow.

rolling the arches is a safer bet especially if the place doing it has an arch roller, they heat the paint so its less likely to crack but no one will guarantee this so be prepared for a possible respray at the rear quarters. i know style dynamics have the special roller tool.

a pro body shop always cut and add metal to arches if flaring is required then respray, just having arches rolled as stated is a decent enough job but as it involves flatening and stretching the arch lips the paint nearly always cracks or flakes off after a few weeks!! if you only have 7.5 j i would get the wheels and suspension fitted (4 wheel alignment essential after!!) and see what you think before spendig 3-400 quid on arch mods and paint you dont need, 7.5 isnt that wide so you can go low with that on a 205 40 tyre
