Eat this 2
no mate the higher the octane the better it is for the engine it burns more efficiently

Col_M 0
Unless you're running a tuned high compression or forced induction engine there isn't really much point going for higher RON fuel. A higher RON just means that the fuel is more resistant to spontaneous autoignition (pinking/knocking/pre-ignition) due to pressure/heat. Modern ECUs can happily compensate and cope with lower RON fuels without pinking, you'll notice a difference between 95 and 97 or 98 purely because the engine can run more 'aggressively' with respect to how much it compresses the fuel before ignition.Once you get much above 97/98 you're not going to notice much if any improvement on a standard engine because the engine is pretty much at it's optimum combustion performance and higher RON fuel is unessessary. People think that higher RON fuel will increase the performance of your engine because it's used in high performance engines, when in fact it doesn't improve the performance in itself it's just neccesary to prevent autoignition in high performance engine's that have high cylinder pressure, this is where people get the impression that high octane = higher performance.Given the choice i'd rather go for the slightly lower octane optimax or Ultimate purely because the 99 won't give my VR6 any noticeable performance increase but the additives in the optimax and ultimate help 'clean' the engine and i've never had my engine pinking on me (as far as i'm aware). If i had a turbo, supercharger or high compression head or pistons then there would be a good reason to use the 99 octane fuel.I'm not slating the tesco stuff at all, if it's cheaper than optimax and ultimate then by all means use it as it won't cause any harm whatsoever but the fact that it's 99 RON isn't going to give you much of a performance boost unless you've got modified VR6.If you're still awake congratulations and any corrections are welcome as i've only done automotive engineering at degree level

Col_M 0
bang on i cudnt av put it beta my self just thought id put it up on the site as there are a few of us runnin more than your average vr....Yeah definately, there are a few here that could benefit from this for sure I just thought i'd set the record straight as when tescos fuel had been mentioned before on other forums i visit some people seem to think it's a miracle power boosting agent for all cars, e.g. thinking it has a higher calorific value or more volatile. Most people on here seem to be more level headed and have the intelligenge to understand the concept It's good that some companies are finally opening their eyes and realise that there is a market for performance fuels here what with certain jap imports only running on 100 RON. purple highline monster 0
if i can be bothered! i try and put optimax in my standard engined vr6, i think fuel economy is slightly better with it? most of the time the run of the mill shite goes in, it never pinks and i cant say i ever notice the difference tbh, like you say some modded cars definately benefit form higher octane fuel combined with all the mods, brands hatch still has a "5 star" fuel pump!!!! Dubsingh 0
yup u can by addatives, my uncles skyline needs blue fuel mixed with optimax .....yup big power is good to have but the hassle you have to go to sometimes its just a joke....i say if the gov is gonna charge us to pay out of our theets atleast give us some puka stuff, its a joke considrin that petty only costa around 24 p an the rest is tax and aother costs.......
