francisjonno 2
Has anyone else seen the warning in Golf+ (from Dubmeister i think it was) about the use of German Style show plates?Apparently there's a new bill going though to make the enforcement of the law regarding number plates stricter. It relates to the expasion of number plates recognition systems (tolls!!!) and the fact that these systems can recognise German style show plates as foreign registered. The article mentioned that the police are to clamp down on the use of show plates on the road and increase enforcement of the £60 fines. The new bill may prevent the use of show plates even at shows!!! (i.e on private property)
Seademon 0
Hmmm I did see that on ED38 but I've had my plates on for almost a year & have only been stopped once although I've had police behind me quite a few times. I think they are reffering more to the plates that have the tax/state stickers in the middle of the plate as these dont register on the system and some speed cameras & congestion cameras dont recognise them. I'll continue to drive with mine on though - If I get stopped I get stopped!I cant see them passing the bill of not being able to use show plates on private grounds as this wouldnt just apply to dubs using German plates, theres american plates, italian plates - all sorts! The most common ones & the only ones in fact that I've seen on the road are the German ones.
badboyV6 4
yeah i saw that article too and it looks like theres going to be a big clamp down next year... better buy some quick before they become illegal! ;-)
purple highline monster 0
ITS TRUE! the new "ring of steel" ANPR (automatic number plate recognition) cameras are here! they are primarily being used to stop criminals entering and leaving areas without being noticed, (with a cash point or 2!) ok so crims change their cars a lot!!! but the ANPR recognises and identifies in a few seconds! wether that car is registered, has insurance, mot, and tax also whos in it in some cases!!! thats why the mot has changed, and dvla know you have an mot before you do! the ANPR info is relayed on plasma screens at police stations and control rooms!! so any stolen, dodgy, criminal linked car is identified and targeted! its there to help not to persecute, although opinions will differ! number plate issues have come up so often!! as long as the plate carries a "e" mark then its allowed, its like replacement lamps have to be "E" stamped aswell "kite marked" as such, if it isnt approved, ie reflective, correct spacing and legible then you cant have it!! i know loads of v dubbers have "mother country" plates!!! but technicaly they are illegal, i know they reflect etc i had a set on my rallye 8) , but you could be given a fine £30 each plate as it stands (although you cant be given 2 tickets for the same offence ie for each plate, so a summons would be given unless you are warned for 1 plate and ticketed for the other!) the main gripe with gatso and dvla/police is those shitty italic "escort cabriolet" !ill owners number plates!!! they are 100% illegal and have been since may 2003, main thing is the plate is readable, if it isnt you will probably get fined, but as the police are usually sooooo busy "catching real criminals" (as everyone implies they should) i doubt you will get stopped
francisjonno 2
Thanks for the "inside" info nick Its not a specific target then.I've had my plates on for 6 months or so, without any probs but just wondered if this was a move to remove any leniency that the police currently give. Imo german style plates aren't takin the pi$$ - only illegal due to font (not too dissimilar anyway) and missing "E" mark - not like other style show plates.

Slim 0
It would be better as part of the EU, to have a standard font across the whole of Europe. I suggest we use the font used in Germany.
purple highline monster 0
as we are all "europeans" and all of the other other countrys have metal plates with the same font, i cant see why we have to have different either! my dad lives in france and his plate refers to his region and his personal number for driving, i think its a much better system, to have a "personal plate" which goes from car to car regardless, come on blair sort it owt! jmwgtiboy 0
funny that this come up as got stopped 2 days ago for using handsfree on phone as he thought i was listening to music. tosser. he told me that my plates not correct ie wrong script, vw motorsport down side, border round letters, vr6 at bottom, german surround, not e-marked and then in the next breath he looking round car saying that it was in good nick, looked good asked what i had planned for it and then saying that no one builds cars like the germans anymore. this took up half my lunch hour so not happy, so left him with a nice smile whilst muttering wanker under my breath. i know few people who are in the police some are ok but others just up their own arses. Valver 0
Ran my german plates on my mk2 for nearly 18months daily until finally getting tugged for them. TBH, the coppers were really cool about it, gave me a producer and to change the plates but that was it.I've had them behind me before many times but I suppose your luck runs out eventually. Shame really, cos german plates look so cool compared to UK ones, and are prefectly legible..........Just out if interest, for a car on proper german plates ie. on holiday here, would the cameras flag it as a Euro plate and just ignore it as a visitor?..... !mistrust
antera309 3
I've got a set of show plates in my garage standing by for when this ANPR system goes live. If I even get a sniff of ANPR being used for speed limit enforcement or road pricing, they're going on as a protest.
