tyres are non directional i did the pressures the other day still pulling left when i swapped the wheels i jacked up on the fornt nearside wishbone is this safe or could i have damaged it somehow. also on another note since i tightened the rear wheel bearings the other day i have a droning noise more noticeable at low speeds whats the correct way to tighten bearings i was told to do the nut up untill it wont turn anymore then slacken off a bit is this wrong.

you could have damaged a bush by jacking it up there! the jacking points are under the sill at the leading edge of the drivers door underneath!!!, jacking on anything else risks damge or putting things out of alignment, as for wheel bearings they are only supposed to nipped up HAND TIGHT then slackened off, if they are too tight they will burn up and fail! taper bearings are supposed to have a slight bit of play in them but not too much, people keep reporting mot testers and knob jockeys at garages are telling them their bearings have gone! the garages need to read up on these things! instead of the old "my mate said" mechanics!!!

i had a rear passenger wheel bearing replaced as it was droning.youdid themup correct-tighten up until nipped up and then 1/4 turn slacken off.the s/c vr has been through various bearings front/rear in the last 18mnths!got the front drivers one droning now?replacing 2morrow.i would assume they take some punishment-braking/accelerating/torque?can you source uprated ones?

ok i sorted the rear bearings theres a verry smaiil bit of play in both now which im happy with but i have this annoying droning or whirring from the front end now can worn tryes or buckled alloys cause this the noise can be heard at lower speeds it never seemed to be there untill i swapped the wheels round and the tyres are non directional.

no i didnt check the calliper clearance i assumed the front wheels would be the same as the read as there standard rims vw bbs type. ive also checked the front wheels for play but theres no movement at all.

looking at the history of the car i can see both rear shocks have been done, both front tie rods, both front suspension top mounting have been done aswell so that can eliminate some stuff all the done around 1997 so could be wheel bearing on front but why would it do it after i swap the wheels.

could be your mix of tyres then? they will all be different compounds, exept the conti ones, idealy on a front wheel drive i would have same brand on the driving wheels, normally all 4 matching if you can! but the rears arent so important, i would swap one of the continental ones to the off side front so you have the same type on the drive wheels and see if that makes it better, that is if they are not directional?
