if your in anyway mechanically minded and feel confident under the bonnet, chains can be done at home. im in the process of doing mine now and its not half as bad as id expected. and theres really no need to take the engine out, or the front end off for that matter.

We know the engine dosen't have to come out, it's the gearbox that needs to come so you can get acess to the bottom chain

Theres top or bottom, not back or front, and the box has to be removed regardless.

I charge £250 labour plus price of parts which is around the £250 mark with new clutch so round about £500 all in mate.

sorry if i sounded like a tw*t saying the engine doesnt have to come out, its just a lot of people on the club gti forum say i cant be done otherwise. personally found it quite easy just taking the box out.
